Officially Released Songs written by the Band
1. Einstein on the Beach - Only performed one time live, and was one of the first songs ever written by Counting Crows. Was released on a compilation disc titled "DGC Raraties" and had a decent amount of radio play!
2. Round Here - A classic song! - probably Adam's greatest song lyrically. Always a highlight when played live and usually runs anywhere from 6 to 14 minutes long. Adam usually adds improv or lyrics from other songs during the middle of the song. At some shows, he will even open the song talking about living in Berkeley and making it as a rock star.
3. Omaha - A crowd favorite that never really changed much from the album version but in 2000, it started featuring a crowd chant portion of the song!
4. Mr Jones - The band's breakthrough hit single that has become a 90's rock classic! The band generally swithces off between playing this song electric and acoustic at shows. Occasionally, it also features a little improv at the beginning or end of the song.
5. Time and Time Again - Earlier in their carreers, Adam would alternate verses of this song with Bob Dylan's "Girl of the North Country" and other songs.
6. Perfect Blue Buildings - Earlier in their carreers, Adam would sometimes end the song with improv from Prince's "Sometimes it Snows in April". Occasionally, even now, he will sing some improv at the end of the song.
7. Anna Begins - This song has become a favorite among many fans but never really changed much when played live compared to the album version until late 2000. During this tour, Adam opened the song with improv and sang improv in the middle and would sometimes invite Ben Elman or Curtis Watson to play sax or trumpet, occasionally stretching the song out an extra 2 to 3 minutes!
8. A Murder of One - This was the live highlight of many shows right up through 1995 until "Round Here" was experimented with more. Adam would add lyrics from other songs or his own in the middle and end of songs sometimes stretching it out 15+ minutes! This was usually played as an encore. Later in 1996 or 97', the band started the common "I have been to Paris, I have been to Rome...." improv.
9. Raining in Baltimore - This song is often used to close shows, but was never really played live on a regular basis until 1997.
10. Rain King - This song always has sounded great live! Early in their carreer, the band would switch off playing this song slow and bluesy or loud and rockin. Adam almost always sang improv or lyrics from other songs in the middle of this song. The most often used song that lyrics have been used from is Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road".
11. Sullivan Street - this song was used to close a lot of shows and occasionally features some improv at the end.
12. Ghost Train - When played live, this song always features a longer opening.
13. Catapult - This song is almost always played acoustic in concert ever since the release of "Across a Wire".
14. Angels of the Silences - Has been used to open many shows, but is also played acoustic as well, which sounds great!
15. Daylight Fading - Great song that sometimes will feature a different approach to the guitar solo when played live. Also, before the song was released, Adam had a whole different set of lyrics to the song that can be heard on a bootleg from 95'!
16. I'm Not Sleeping - Unlike the studio version, the live version does not feature an orchestra.
17. Goodnight Elisabeth - Great song played live well before any studio version was ever released! Even the early versions of this song, would sometimes feature a small bit of improv at the end. However it was not until 2001, that the song took a totally different turn and began being stretched out with improv sometimes as long as 14 minutes!
18. Children in Bloom - Another song played live well before the studio version came out. When played live, this song is not much different from the studio version, although sometimes it will feature a long opening or a very hard rocking drawn out ending!
19. Have You Seen Me Lately? - This song started as a rocker, then became a slow acoustic song in 97', then in 99' it was changed again into a southern rock tinged classic!
20. Miller's Angels - This song started being played live in late 94', and slowly stopped being played live.
21. Another Horsedreamer's Blues - A classic lyrical song said to be a second part to "Marjorie" which was never officially released! This song is usally played live when there is someone backstage to come out and play sax or trumpet with the band!! This is a treat when played live!
22. Monkey - short pop rock piano driven song that is played live every once in a while.
23. Recovering the Satelites - Great live song that was used to open many shows and sometimes features some improv at the end of the song!
24. Mercury - This is a great song not played very often but in August of 1999 up until the end of the year, the band would often keep this song up for 9 minutes +, as Adam would sing improv about an ex-girlfriend that he had and despised!
25. A Long December - Another classic hit that most people recognize right away! This song closed many shows and often opened with a short piano opening, a little improv, or an opening song such as "Live Forever" by Oasis. At other times, Adam would play the first verse all by himself and the rest of the band would not start playing until the chorus.
26. Walkaways - This song closed more shows than just about any but did open some shows when the band would play in Boston.
27. Chelsea -
This song was released as a secret song on "Across a Wire"
and is mostly driven by saxophone and trumpet! this song was rarely
played live but was played on piano only in 95'!
28. High Life - Great song that
doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version.
29. Hanginaround - This song gets a large response from the crowd when played live and usually features lots of crowd participation in the song! During the 2000 tour with +Live+, the bands that opened for Counting Crows would almot always come out and jam on the song at the end of each show with guitar, sax, trumpet, drum, and piano solos being thrown in throughout the tour! Adam also usually throws some lyrics from TLC's "No Scrubs" at the end as well!
30. St Robinson and His Cadillac Dream - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version. However it gets a pretty large response when the band plays live in Virginia Beach or Washington DC.
31. Amy Hit the Atmosphere - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version.
32. Speedway - Occasionally this song will feature a little improv at the end of the song when played live!
33. I Wish I Was a Girl - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version. Although, the band did play the song acoustic at the Shim Sham Club on 5/5/00 and it sounded incredible!!
34. All My Friends - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version.
35. Four Days - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version.
36. Colorblind - Great live song that was used to open quite a lot of shows.
37. Mrs. Potter's Lullabye - Great song that doesn't change much when played live compared to the studio version.
38. Kid Things - this song almost always sounds better played live than the secret song version from the "This Desert Life" album!
39. Baby, I'm a Big Star Now - To the best of my knowledge this song was unfortunately never played live. It was released as a b-side from "This Desert Life".
