        "NOTES FROM A RETIRED HUNTER"
2000-01 hunting season by Donald Hughes
Area hunted was from Chesapeake Bay to Ocean and Delaware Bay

Saturday,  Sept 1, 2001

Hi Guys,
Well,  after having geese in the fields for two weeks the last week before the season open their were none anywhere to be found.  Harold,  Eddie and I went anyway,  of-course.  We saw one flock of geese that went overhead and killed two.  I didn't hit anything but air.  We stayed and hunted both morning and than in the evening,  but just know geese.  Weather is to cool off,  so maybe that will help things and even if it doesn't,  it is nice to be able to get out in the field.     donald

Eddie and I hunted the morning and had one flock come.  Eddie killed one,  me zip.  I am having trouble with my new shells not loading in my gun.  Seems they are showing the BBB pellets in a bulge at the end of the shell and stick in the magazine.  Case of shells that are no good to me!
Eddie and I hunted the evening at a puddle in a big field.  Could have killed several Mallards and a Black duck.  Again one flock of geese.  I had gone to shooting my reloads.  This time it was me that killed the goose.  Seems two a day is it for us.

Harold and I went this morning,  but the geese that came to the field went in the back of the field,  about 75.  Harold walked down to see if he could get close to them,  but they wouldn't let him.  He had waked about a mile to get behind them and went they jumped they came on out toward me.  One end of the flock was close enough and with my reloads I put 2 down.
Harold, Eddie and I hunted this evening.  We had seen some geese in a field and setup to see if any would come back.  Had four flocks,  two that we shot at.  Came home with three more.  Five for the day and broke our record.  We know of 14 that we have killed,  but not found all of them.  It's 0130am and I can't sleep,  hearing geese moving NOW,  so I guess it will be new birds in the morning for Harold and I.

Harold and I.  One shot at birds that circled from a 100 yds in the air.  Just like wild ones.  Beautiful!  Shot them over dekes.  We each got one and a great memory.    donald

Jeff and I.  One shot.  I got one,  Jeff got two.  Jeff took the boat and went for blind sites.  I went to bed.   donald

Jeff and I.  One shot as they flew overhead low.  I got one,  Jeff got his two.
Eddie and I setup a new field.  One single came early and set out in the field at 100 yds and when Eddie went out to jump him it flew right over his head on the way out.  One dumb dead goose.  We then shot at one flock overhead and we each killed 2 more.  Five was plenty so we left with geese coming to the field.   donald

Harold,  Eddie and I.  We had two shots.  I killed two each time.  Killed 5 more.  I was to go out with Pat that evening,  plus we had plenty of geese to skin.  That's 32 in the truck so far this season,  skinned most all of them for dekes this winter.  donald

Woke up late to find that a drug party had happen at my grandsons shed.  My new BPS stolen out of a locked truck.  Called the law,  but they will not do anything about it.  They said they would put me in jail if I hit him.   Grandson is being sent to stay with his dad.    donald

Hi Guys,
Lost a few days!  Ended the season for local with 35 birds,  most all skinned for mounting.  Replaced my shotgun with the same Browning BPS,  that is in camo.  Thank God for insurance.  Now if we could just do something with the Grandson!  The law does nothing!  He is sure,  he can do anything he wants and nothing is to be done about it.  Course it's impossible to sit and watch him every minute.
I spent yesterday mounting geese and catching cats.  Hauled 9 of the damn things away from here.  Don't think the folks next door saw me and if they did I don't care.
Sunny had broke one of her due-claw nails while hunting locals and I took her to the Vet.  He pulled the nail out and she is out of commission for a few days.  Seems to be healing OK.
Looking forward to a hunt with Jeff and Bill on Thursday for Teal.  Nothing at Cabin Creek.    donald

Figgered I would write this morning and let you know I am alive.  Been killing a few Snows on De. public hunting grounds,  but this morning there was no one at the checkin station.  The public hunting is managed so baddy that one wants to try to hunt it.  It was an 1 1/2 ride for me for nothing.

If anyone is reading these letters, it would be nice to have an account of what your life is like. I would love to hear from you.
