        "NOTES FROM A RETIRED HUNTER"
2000-01 hunting season by Donald Hughes
Area hunted was from Chesapeake Bay to Ocean and Delaware Bay

Sept 1, 2000
Well last Wednesday, I made the decision on where to start hunting
the local geese on the first of the month.  I needed to made the
decision, early, so that Harold could have enough time to escape from
New York City to get down here to hunt. I still have to laugh ever time
I think of telling her that we would wake her up early in the morning
with our guns.  Her statement was "kill the bustards"
Eddie and his job foreman, Mike and I set out about 50 mounts, 75
yds from the barn at a farm at Galestown.  About 200 yds from where the
geese would roast.  With the fog and rain we have been getting, close
was a most.
Friday morning Harold was in my driveway in plenty of time and we
headed over to the farm to meet Eddie and Mike.   Course I had told them
the geese would fly at about 7 o'clock, but we were there at 6 o'clock
and let the mosquitos feed on us.  The first flock was about 20 geese
and they spotted the mounts and came out into them.  I new the jitters
were in all of us, so I kept saying ' let them come ' till they had
their feet out and were backpedaling just outside the mounts at 30 yds
and the lead gander was almost on the ground.  Yelled 'gettem'  all hell
broke louse.  I killed the first one I shot at and then just shot
tail-fearthers out of the next two.  One of which when down out over the
high beans that were all the way around the small piece of sweet corn
that had been left cause of wetness.  We learned quickly that any
cripples that went into the beans would not be found..  We had killed 5
dead and seems everyone had cripples, but were unable to get any of
them.
Seems the rest of the geese that were on the pond NEW something was
up, cause from then on they wanted no part of coming to our mounts.  The
next flock was about 30 and landed way out from us.  Had 'Tuffy',
Eddie's dog go out and get them up.  Sunny, I left home, cause of no
blind and little cover and first day jitters.
Once those were out of the field, we positioned between the mounts
and the roast.  In the fog they were flying low and I told them it was
time to take them when they go overhead and set with our backs to the
mounts.  No wind at all.  Next out was about 35 and as they started
overhead I say 'gettem'.  Four fell dead.  Loaded and the next ones were
overhead, about 20.  Yelled, 'gettem' and we got 4 more.  Had just time
enough to get the geese to us, when they were coming again, from the
pond.  Looked like all of them, maybe 75 or 100.  As they started
overhead I asked if we should shoot them and Mike was saying 'no there's
to many', course that's all it takes to mess up any shot that we had.
Course they kept right on going and going.
Eddie and Mike when for the truck.  Everyone was soaking wet cause
of sweat, sure we all smelled great.  We had rounded around in the muddy
field and really looked 'well'.  It was about 730 AM.  Harold and I got
things ready to go into the truck, but just as the truck was on it's way
we had a flock of about 15 come back toward the pond and as they went
by, one more hit the ground.  We had 14 geese with flies all over them
waiting for the truck.
Evening hunt was 2 flocks that when overhead and we killed 4 out of
each.  Had Mike's, 9 year old, son Cole with us and I think from now on
when Cole is no where to be found at 0300 o'clock Saturday morning, in
the fall of the year, we all know where he will be!  Really 'haunts' me
that I have grandsons that were 9 and 10 years old, when they closed it,
and will never know of the traditional Eastern Shore Goose Hunt.  Just
one bird for them a year would have been so nice and I can't believe it
would have hurt things.  At Christmas and New Years they would have been
after the big one from New York and Quebec anyway.  Glad that this year
they have come to their senses and are allowing one on Youth Day.  My
grandsons are of course to old now and have loss the experience forever.

Sept 2, 2000
Met everyone at the farm barn at 630 AM.  Some of the first day
jitters gone and little blood left for the mosquitos!  All of us stiff
from being wet on the first day, but nothing would have stopped us!
Cole was still all excited!
We had 3 overhead shots and killed 8 more.  That's 30 in the truck
and just unable to get those that were cripples in the high beans.
Farmer was tickled when we told him!  Told him we would stay right on
them. hehehe!
Course Cole got his first goose and I think he will sleep with it
tonight.  One happy young man!
I will go to using my single shot, cause they are getting hard to
give away.
Eddie and I were going to go for the evening hunt, but it T'stormed
and rained so we licked our sore backs and figured we would get to them
again Monday.  I have 3 other places that I will not even get to before
the Teal season opens up and I will be chasing them.  But I will get to
all my spots, got to keep the farmers happy, hehehe!

Sept 4, 2000
Well, I didn't even get to go this morning.  Harold didn't have to go back to New York and was in the driveway waiting to go.  Good thing as I found out when we got to the field to hunt, cause Eddie's boss, which was fine with me, has turned into three people.  We had promised to take a friend of the landowner, who I had met at the local store.  It was to be his first goose hunt and not knowing anyone and being very safely minded, he didn't think he would go, with 7 people hunting.  That's all I would have needed to upset the landowner and lose all the hunting rights.
I let Eddie take his crowd to the farm that we were to hunt and then took Harold and landowners friend over to the other farm were we had left mounts out, to hunt.  Would have been a half mile across a muddy field for this old man to walk, glad Harold came, it had rained hard, so I didn't get to hunt at all this holiday.  Course, I knew that geese wouldn't fly and they would be lucky to get a single or so to come to them.
I came home and went for boat for tomorrow!
Eddie and his crew came to the house first after the hunt.  I told him there were a couple of rules that we follow!  His boss, speaks up and says that he doesn't want to ride by himself in the mornings to hunt.  Tough shit, I guess his hunting with me is over, as he has turned into 3 people on a personal invite!  Can you imagine what it would turn into with this happening in 3 hunts?
They had 2 singles come and land into the mounts and said they let boss's son shoot one and his brother shoot the other.  BTW, we ahd not shot one sitting till then, cause I always call the shots flying.  Most all our geese were killed overhead!  They only saw one other small flock of geese flying.  Eddie kept asking why I didn't come on out with them, and I asked if he felt like they needed any help shooting 2 singles that came to them!      Harold came and they had 2 shots killing 3 geese.  One out of a flock and then a pair that came right in.  Says the landowner's friend was tickled.  He stayed and helped me cut some brush for morning and get another post ready for the site.  Looks like rain this afternoon, so I doubt if anyone will hunt.   donald

It didn't rain!!!!      Eddie's crowd wanted the farm next to the pond were we had killed the geese.  So I had the other farm, which was the spot that I could get to, 'walk to', anyway.  Wish Harold or Randy could have been reached.  Had a flock of about 35 sail over my head at 35 yds. and my first crippled the bird but didn't crunch so I followed him and gave him another load.  Damn big bird.  Third shot was at a littler one and it crunched great at about 45 yds.  Two is my personal limit!  All I want to clean a day.  Took my time getting the truck and Sunny had the monsters to the lane by the time I got back to the irrigation pivot.
Eddie's crowd killed 8 more.  Shot at 4 flocks.  That's 45 all together.
Jeff, we have had one banded bird and I was going to save it for you, but Eddie says you weren't even there and wants it, so I will let him have it.  Course we don't know who shot it, cause there four four of us shooting that first day.
I have a man that I hunted with when I was a kid coming over to hunt with me in the morning.  Wind to be NorthEast at 20 to 30, so I checked with him to make sure he wanted the geese, 10 of them, huh!  He does, so I will let you know what happens.   donald

Sept 5, 2000
Met my buddy this morning and expected a great hunt.  Never saw a
goose.  Go figure. Did see ducks.  Jeff, this should send the Teal for
Thursday, huh?  Sat in the field till 0930AM in a great cool NorthEast
wind at 20 to 30, skies overcast.  Would have through it was the day to
hunt, BUT, that's hunting, huh.
When back over to the field this afternoon with Eddie, but the geese
just didn't move all day.

Sept 6, 2000
Well, they flew again.  Got to my irrigation pivot at 0650am and
was leaving at 0710am with 5 in the truck.  The first flock I saw came
to the back of the field and I made enough noise to get there
attention.  They headed up my way and I kept the noise up cause they
seemed to like it.  No circling,  they just kept coming till they were
just outside the dekes and about 10 feet off the ground.  About 20,
going to land out in front of the dekes.  As they crossed,  closer then
'30yds' then where they were going,  I shot what I knew was a little one
just behind that big bitch that was bringing them in.  Auto crunched him
with those #2 and I swung on the following bird, crunched him and saw
one next to him fall also.  Third shot crunched the last bird going out.

The old girl out front of the flock swung out over the field and
brought them  right back over my head at 40 yds.  Knew I had 4 down,  so
I figured I might as well get one more.  Damn if I didn't miss on the
first shot.  Knew I had him dead to rights, but guess I stopped my
swing.  Second shot rolled him nicely.  Had to shoot one cripple that
Sunny was chasing around in the field and after and minute or two,  to
let my heart quit beating so hard,  I headed for the truck.
Saw more geese in the air on the way home then any day yet!
Nothing flew yesterday!
Jeff you want me to save these for you when you get here this
evening?  Take to picker?
Teal in the morning !~!!!!!     donald
     p.s. annn't life great!!!!

Sept 7, 2000
'HUMILIATION'  time.  MAN,  JEFF PUT ME TO SHAME.  I couldn't hit shit this morning.  Same gun and shells I killed 4 geese with 3 shots the morning before,  but you think I could kill a Teal,  HELL no.  Tryed the little buggers about 15 times and have not touched one YET.   Jeff may never let me live it down!
I bet I have smaller shot and tigher partern in the morning.  Hope it helps!  At lease I can eat Teal tonight,  cause of Jeff's kindness!  He had his limit again this year,  before the sun came up!
My morning started bad and then got worse.  After making sure everything was perfect with the boat and trailer I went to bed ready to go at 0230am,  ouch.  I got about a mile from the house to fine I had a flat on the boat trailer.  Figgered I better just take the thing home and leave it,  cause it would make me late for the drawing if I tryed fixing it in the dark.
Met Jeff and Greg at Little Creek Station and of course it was all the way down to the last couple of draws before we got picked.  There was few blinds left by that time.  Lucky we got to go at all.  Pass shooting Teal is HARD.  However,  like I said,  Jeff had his before sunrise and Greg killed 2 nice bluewings.  Me,  I got zip.  Well,  a sore shoulder!
Hope Jeff forgets this morning,  HA,  fat chance.
I WILL do better in the morning!     donald

Sept 8 &9, 2000
Well, after seeing lots of Teal on opening day,  the morning
before,  Jeff and I saw almost nothing the next day.  Did kill two
Canada's yesterday evening.
This morning Eddie had a crowd at the pond,  so I had to go to
another spot with Harold and we only had 4 geese that came to the field
and they landed way in the back of it.  Never fired our guns.
Talked too Eddie and his crowd had 3 flocks come to them and killed
6.  Feeling bad about Eddie messing me up carrying more then the one
guest limit that we are supposed too,  but guess it will just have it
eat at me and hope I can forget it.  Course it doesn't seem to be having
any affect on him,  cause he just called and wants me to take him to
Easton to a gun shop to get some work done to his gun that messed up
this morning.  I will tell him again on the way what I think of not
being able to hunt the better field this morning cause he doesn't know
how stick with the one guest limit.  Guess in his mind 7 people laying
in an open field is fine.  Anyway,  guess I have vented enough.
Pat's glad tomorrow is Sunday.  Says she hasn't seen me all week.
     Granny is Granny.
Hope everyone is fine.  Write if you know how.   donald

Sept 11, 2000
Well,  it sure looks like it's time for me to go Dove hunting.  Geese are just not coming to either of the 3 fields that I have been hunting.  Guess we have finally taught them not to.
Was planning to go Teal hunting in the morning,  but it's calling for fog,  so that's out.  Will try to get under the tame geese went they come out of the pond.  Does look better for the Teal opener of the Md season on Thursday.
Hope I can hit those Doves!  Will let you know.  donald

Sept 12, thru 14. 2000
Goosing seems to be done for me.  Eddie and I did manage to hit enough doves to have a mess to eat.  We got 22 Monday,  18 Tuesday. Jeff came down Wednesday and we got 8 more.
This morning was Md opener for Teal.  Jeff and I were at our spot before light, except full moon light.  Sky clear and FAC.  We had 2 Teal come to the dekes and Jeff killed one Bluewing.  We saw few other Teal.  Hope the morning if better!

Sept 15, 2000
Well,  I was one of those guys I hate!  There was a storm come by
early this morning and it shut the electric off and of course my alarm
clock.  Hell,  I was sound asleep!  Woke at about 5 AM and looked for
Jeff's truck #, which I didn't have.  Watched the weather and hoped they
went without waiting for me.  I rode to fine my goose fields much to wet
to hunt and when I got back home,  there sat Jeff.
Seems no-one showed.  Somehow it made me feel better.  Caz,
Murray, and the F&W man!  No-one showed.  Course Jeff said that it was
pouring rain and lighting was flashing so he wasn't to surprrised.
Course by sunrise it was fine for duck hunting!  We rode up so that I
could show him my Federalsburg blind site and he headed home.
Will go with Eddie this evening to try for a goose,  some-where.
Have asked for the disability blind at Little Creek for in the morning.
donald

Sept 16, 2000
Eddie and I met Harold at the Little Creek station and decided to try the lottery.  Worked out that we got the same blind that I had to began with.  We had one shot,  at 3 Bluewings,  that we all missed, and saw maybe 25 or so Teal altogether.  We got skunked.  Sunny,  however,  presented us with a Mallard that was not feather out enough to fly.  Sunny,  1,  people 0.  Had to put her in the truck in order to free it!
Pat and I found a Mallard hen with about 8 little ones on Sunday that still had not feathered out enough to even have beginning wing feathers.  These East Coast Mallards just keep on having broth's till it is Winter.  Course there are folks that will tell you that those released ducks will not hatch any little ones.  Bullshit!  Now that they,  'F&W',   have proven that they are different biology duck,  I guess we will finally stop hearing how they are coming from the West on over here after millions of years of not doing so!  Hell,  I been telling people that for years.  Now maybe they will believe me!  donald

Sept 18, 2000
Jeff and I tried the Nanticoke River for Teal this morning.  Never fired our guns.  Did see a few Greenwings.  We will try farther South in the morning.  Heading for my camper in Va.  Then decide where to go in the morning.    donald

Tuesday, Sept 19, 2000
Met Jeff and we when on to Fairmount.  There by 5 AM.  Sat in the dark for a long time.  Weather was overcast and spitting rain with a good wind.  Stayed till 8 AM.  Didn't even see a Teal!  Really,  not even a duck.  When on to search out Va., hoping to hunt Brant there.  Maybe in the morning.  I am going back to the Nanticoke River.  At least I see some Greenwings there.  donald

Thursday,  Sept 21, 2000
Fog yesterday so I slept in.
Victory,  victory,  that's my cry!  I can't hardly believe that I am so satisfied with the fact that I finally killed a Teal.  I was all setup on a creek on the Nanticoke River before light.  Woodies everywhere!  Just a couple Teal that flew.  Just enjoying the morning.  It was about 0730AM when suddenly a single Greenwing Teal came over the marsh a spotted the 50 dekes a had put out.  It sailed right in.  Sat in the middle of the dekes and immediately knew it had fucked up.  Didn't hardly wet it's feet before it was up.  I got it about 8 foot off the water when it was ready to level off and get out of there.  I had put the dekes about 40 yds away from where I was to set in the boat, so I had a good pattern with Bertha.  Sunny made a great retrieve.  That was it for ducks,  but it made my day.
Pat headed for Nashville this morning for 4 days,  so I will be able to just hunt and sleep.  Heaven!  Anyone want an old lady?  donald

Friday, Sept 22, 2000
Beautiful sunrise with Woodies swimming in the dekes, but no Teal.  Guess I will go in the morning cause it's the last day.  donald

Saturday,  Sept 23, 2000
Rain,  rain go away,  Donald and Eddie wanted to play.  Well,  the last day of the Teal season and it's raining.  Eddie and I are too old to enjoy sitting in the boat in the rain, so I guess its over for this year.  I hunting each day,  but only killed one Greenwing Teal.
At least Jeff and I got to see the exodus.  First cold front of the season.  A moment in time that I am sure neither of us will ever forget.  To bad that it happened on Sept 7th,  the very first day of the Teal season in Delaware.  I have never seen such a site with small ducks 'Teal'.
Just after first light the sky was filled with Teal.  I mean as far as you could see everywhere,  there were Teal.  No holes in the sky at all,  just Teal everywhere.  They were at three levels,  very high,  about 100 yds,  and right on the woods.  Only for a short time and they disappeared.  I just didn't want to believe that they had gone on South,  but they sure did.  Still,  while it ruined the Teal season,  it was something to see.
I wish the DNR would open the season along with the local goose season and then we would have a better chance of getting a bit of the season while they are here.  Course it would help with the local goose problems also.

Monday,  Sept 25, 2000
Well,  I haven't been writing daily deeds often,  cause I figure that most of you don't enjoy reading about my hunting and that's most of my life.  Course you could read about it at   http://www.intercom.net/user/ppeds/2000-2001huntseason.html
My small duck early season was ruined by a cold front that went through here on the 7th of Sept which was the first day of our season,  course if I was a little duck and it got cold I would fly South also,  you too,  huh?  Did have some fun shooting local geese.
They are catching lots of fish and a few more crabs, but I spent my time chasing ducks and geese.  Will be trying the fish this week if  it ever stops raining.
I am still on my diet.  Tired of just meat,  but will stick with it.  I have lost a little better than 100 lbs and it is getting hard to lose anymore.  I am still hitting 300 lbs, but it's better than the 410 that I was.  Would be nice to have some energy again.
Pat has been down to Nashville for a 4 day ped's conference and is due back today.  Man do I miss her!  Old lady driving me nuts.  Glad I have a heart condition and will just fall over and not grow old and mean,  course I guess my kids think I am mean now.
Well, I am going to put a chicken in the rotisserie and jump into the Jacuzzi and warm these old bones.  It's 50 and raining here ,  so it will feel good.  Life goes on.  Great,  huh?  donald

Oct 1, 2000
Well,  the best thing that happened this week was that Pat came home!  Course I am never sure that she will.  Not sure I would come back to me.  Anyway,  its nice to have her back.  She's been going on and on about the trip and I try to act interested.
I did go fishing one day with a friend that wanted to show me his new boat.  Happy for him,  it's beautiful.  All you could ask for in a fishing boat.  We tried to catch a striper,  but I ended up putting a small hook on so that I could catch and have a mess of White Perch to eat.
Eddie and I spent yesterday getting the duck blind at Cabin Creek ready.  New floor and brushed.  She's ready,  but it sure takes a lot of time.  Hope Bill and Jeff get down to kill a Wood duck there.
Geese showing up everywhere.  Canadians with a few Snows staying at Hurlock pit,  Which I will brush sometime this week.  Still waiting on my Milton lease to cut corn so we can put a pit in there.  Course we have to move the blind over at Hard Scrabble.  Work is never ending.
Did have one day this week that I had a great time shooting Crows.  Had seen them using a sweet corn field for some time and setup along side the irrigation system pump,  which they were used to.  Wind was blowing 20 to 30 and they just kept coming into the wind looking for the caller.  They made easy shots hanging in the wind and I shot bertha to get use to her.  Course 2 oz's of steel 4's was a pattern that was deadly.  Saved a lot of little baby ducks lives!
Snow goose hunting opens in the morning,  but don't seem to have a place to go.  Guess I could go to the marsh up at BomBay Hook,  but I just don't think I had better go by myself.  I have lost 100 lbs,  but I still get angina when I push myself.  Maryland opens on the 14th,  so I guess I can wait.  Course duck season opens the 5th,  so I know I can make it.
I'll be working on putting something together of the 5th and try to fine the best spot for Harold,  Jeff  and I to go.  Tried to get a whole of Little Creek Station,  but just can't seem to catch anyone there.  I will stay on it the first of the week.  donald

Thursday, Oct 5, 2000
Well the first day was a dod.  Didn't want to face the lottery, so Harold and I when to Hard Scrabble at the little pond.  I had told Harold that I had not checked it in a couple weeks,  but that there were ducks there the last time I had checked.  We never even saw a duck!  Came home.  We were in the Del Nanticoke public hunting area by 9 o'clock with 50 dekes set waiting for a Woodie.  Still setting in the fog at noon!  We quit without ever getting a shot.  So much for the first day.  Only problem is that the weather is supposed to be the same in the morning.
We will go some place anyway!    donald

Monday,  Oct 09,  2000
Jeff,  Eddie and  setup where we had seen plenty of Woodies a few days early.  Cold weather send them South?  We saw maybe a dozen!  Jeff left early and then Eddie and I had a pair of Mallards that got close enough for a long shot and I send the Drake sailing down,  but to far for a retrieve.  Hunted Cabin Creek in the evening and didn't even see a duck.
This morning I when to Sharptown,  killed my 2 Woodies and had about 5 other shots after I had my limit.  Had a Mallard come to the dekes and killed it .  A Drake that looked like a hen,  almost no color and lots of pinfeathers.  Woodies picked beautiful.  Cabin Creek with Eddie in the evening and again nothing.  Think I will go back to Sharptown in the morning.
 donald

Tuesday,  Oct 10,  2000
Woke to light rain.  Decided to go to Cabin Creek,  so I wouldn't get wet.  Already sick with  cold and flu.  By the time I got there it had stopped raining.  Saw nothing.  donald

Thursday, Oct 12, 2000
Yesterday I was to sick to get out of bed!  Stayed in bed for about 36 hours.  Up this morning for a seaduck hunt with Jeff.  Was to meet his at 0830 at Taylor's Island ramp,  he had gone over to Cater's Cove for daybreak.  We were setup by 9 and quit at noon with 10 in the boat.  BTW,  we had Greg with us so we were OK with that many ducks.  I couldn't hit shit!  I will take my auto in the morning cause they were just too close for Bertha.  Great day!!!
All Surf Scoters today.  Expected some Blacks,  but.  Seaduck fingers tomarrow!     donald

Friday 13, Oct,  2000

Met Jeff and the ramp at Taylor's Island at 730.  Beautiful weather and beautiful shooting.  Took turns shooting and had our Scoters and were home to load dekes for the field by noon.  If anyone wants to go NOW is the hour!  donald

Sunday,  Oct, 15th,  2000

Well,  Friday the 13th was Pat's birthday!  Hunted with Jeff in the morning and we left for Western Shore by early afternoon,  heading for an Randy Lee concert.  Party till after 0200AM Saturday morning.  Great to be with Pat!      Home in till to go to Cabin Creek for the sunset,  but of course we saw no ducks.      Hoping that the Snow Goose fields will be cut so that I can get them setup this week.  Also counting on going Seaduck hunting as much as possible.  My cold has just about gone.  Whew!      What's happening around your house?    donald

Monday,  Oct 16th, 2000
Headed for Little Creek to try the Snows this morning.  Had 6 pass shots at 45 to 60 yds.  Bertha did her job.  Got 1 White and 3 Gray,  'my limit'.  Weather was calm and clear and I hit my goose each time crunching 4 and sailing 2.  They were falling into high fragmitis and at first I was not sure Sunny could get to them,  but she got all without any trouble except for pushing them through the thick fragmitis.
     Snow goose for supper!    donald

Tuesday, Oct 17th, 2000

Just got back from Little Creek.  Same spot,  same time,  no shot.  NorthEast wind no good.  They came out a mile away from me.

Time to paint white.

donald

Friday,  Oct 20,  2000

Well,  I stayed home Wednesday cause of the wet.  Thursday morning I headed for Del and tried the Snows.  Killed one white one to mount.  Friday I was going again,  but blind was not open and I when with Jeff Seaduck hunting.  Jef had a hunting party and Caz, the hunting party,  invited me to come along.  I enjoyed watching them have fun and of course with me there it took them a little longer to have there limits.  16 Surf Scoters.  Course we were still ashore before noon.  I think they had a great time and will be back for Jeff to take again.

Plans are to Snow hunt in the morning,  but I am still having to go the lottery.  Hate it.  donald

Sunday,  Oct 22,  2000

Went to Little Creek Saturday morning with Eddie.  We only got one young gray bird,  but Eddie was happy cause he got his first one of the season.  It's now mounted and ready to go hunting with me.

Jeff stopped by after his Seaduck hunt and said his party was not interested in killing a lot of ducks and only killed a couple to have mounted.  They had about 50 flocks that came right to the dekes and just took pictures and watched in almost unbelief.  He has another party on Monday and the weather looks great for it.  I am so glad,  guiding is beginning to take off for him.

Pat had hurt her back, but is now back to work.  Man,  she gets depressed quick when she is struck at home.  I am so glad she can now get out of the house and back to work.  She's much easier to live with.  I feel bad when I am having so much fun with life and she's not.

Ate Snow goose till I couldn't hold any more last night and now that I am shooting gray birds again it will be a good winter for eating them!  I think the only waterfowl that is better is a Greenwing Teal.

We have company coming today.  A friend that stayed at the house when she was going to nursing school with Pat.  I have a basket of Crabs to pick up,  free ones for a mount that I did for a man,  and we will steam them and hopefully they will enjoy that.  He also wants to go fishing,  so I will take him down to the bay this evening to catch a Rock 'Stripper'.

Still none of our fields cut so that we can Snow goose hunt on them.  Maybe this week!

Well, I tryed Hurlock for the first time this morning.  Saw about 6 flocks that took a look at the dekes from high up,  but nothing that got close enough.  A shitload of Canadains. I will head to Little Creek in the morning.  Anyone want to go?     donald

Well,  I sat at Little Creek yesterday morning,  but this weather just doesn't make them fly.  Sat at Hurlock this morning and watched the wheat grow.  It's about 200 Snows there but they didn't come close to me.  Guess I will ride to Little Creek in the morning just to keep going.  Would be offal easy to sit and vegetate.    Anyone want to go seaducking?  donald

Well,  I had the truck loaded with mounts and was headed for a scouting job for Jeff and Jerry at Rt6 pit.  However most of the way up I was fogged in and without being able to see more than 100 yds I decided to check out Ted Harvey impoundment on the way by.  It sounded like it had plenty of Snows in it.  I when to the station and found that no one was in the water blinds,  so I went there to set in the fog and try for a pass shot.  It worked,  I got 7,  1 white,  rest gray.     Sorry Jeff and Jerry,  but I didn't think I would have at chance of decoying any birds at Rt6,  so I have no idea what it's like there.  Nothing flew today till well after 9 o'clock,  so I didn't even ride up that way.     donald

No fog this morning.  Got one white one and should have killed two.  Still wondering how I missed and easy shot over my head!  The duck season opens in the morning so I will not have any chance at Snows.  Think Eddie and I may stay at Hurlock and see what the wind blows in there.   donald

Saturday was the first day of the De duck,  so Eddie and I didn't even try the lottery for a public blind.  We tried Hurlock pit,  but of course never got a shot.  Spend most of the day working on brushing blinds.  We will head for Hard Scrabble this morning to see if we can get the lumber from one of the blinds there that is going to be no good this year.      Pat is great.  Granny is Granny.  Life is good.  How's yours?

Well,  it was a little knotty out on the Chesapeake Bay today,  but is was wonderful also.  Killed our ducks,  4 of which were Whitewings.  Saw a dozen flocks of Squalls and 6 or 8 of Buffies.  Several Bluebills,  one flock of about 15 or 20 came right to the dekes and with the sun shining on them as they banked into the wind,  it would make any mans dick hard.
