Listed below are several punishments that your character could be sentenced to for committing a crime. Please make certain to review each particular crime and their possible punishments, then check with this list to see what that punishment might entail exactly. All those who play within the Ogier Stedding will be held responsible for their actions, and be expected to role-play accordingly.
Banishment/Exile
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Banishment is turning someone away from the Stedding never to return, unless specific exceptions are made during a time of sentencing. This is used only in the most extreme cases whenever dealing with the Ogier. There can be a time limit set on the period of banishment, or it can be for life. Banishment may include the Stedding the Ogier lives within, or all the occupied Stedding others have contact with. The Ogier is ostracized and no longer allowed to communicate with a member of the Ogier community. Sometimes, those that are banished are also branded in such a way that others will know an Ogier for who they are.
Exile is turning someone away from their family or life. This is used only in the most extreme cases, when an Ogier has done something unforgivable, such as breaking an Oath. Such Ogier may be exiled from other´s lives as well, depending on how series the crime may be. Those in Exile will be allowed to walk through the Stedding, however no other Ogier will interact with them.
OOC: For those characters that are banished from the Stedding entirely, there are "Abandoned Stedding"´ that can be used to prolong life and stay off the longing. For those characters that are banished from a single Stedding, there are "Occupied Stedding" that can be used to prolong life and stay off the longing. These are the Stedding that are found on the "Dspace" map, but are not official "stedding rooms" like Stedding Maotai.
Branding
~~~~~~~~
Branding is marking someone for a crime with either an extremely hot rod or an extremely cold rod, with a symbol that tells what sort of crime they might have committed. The mark is generally placed on a visible feature of the body where it cannot be covered easily. Each Stedding has its own set of brands, and symbols, for various crimes committed, and a record is kept of every Ogier´s name and their brands marking them, and passed to different Stedding for others´ to keep a wary eye out
Execution
~~~~~~~~
Execution is taking another´s life, for a crime committed, by ending it. This punishment is reserved for only the -most- extreme of crimes, such as mass murder. This also sentence may -only- be given by a consensus within the Council of Elders. Ogier do not death and killing lightly, and even more so they do not take killing others for a crime lightly. The Ogier method of executing another is hanging until dead. They do not believe in spilling blood unless it is absolutely necessary.
OOC: It is understood that this form of punishment takes the right away from the player to continue playing their character. The Ogier staff will do everything necessary to make certain something else can be arranged, -however- if a player does mass kill a group of humans or Ogier within the Stedding, this is the only choice we have to go. The Ogier would not let someone out of the Stedding who is obviously a danger to not only themselves, but to others.
Fines
~~~~~
Fines are retribution through gold or goods paid to Ogier for misdemeanors or other crimes committed against another. Often times, the Council of Elders will charge the family of a young Ogier a fine for mischief that their child has gotten into, to pay for any damages done to property or personal wares.
Physical Punishment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Physical punishment may include a variety of ways of punishing another character. The exact type of physical punishment desired or needed will be reviewed on a case by case scenario. Young Ogier, more often than, receive a spanking for mischief they find themselves into. Most often, that is enough to keep them away from making the same mistake twice. Older Ogier may find themselves in mire dire situations than those of the younger generation.
Servitude
~~~~~~~~
Servitude for the Ogier is another way of working a debt off. Often times, the Ogier cannot replace something that was stolen or broken, so another way to work off the value of something taken or whatever is to work things off. The exact nature of how one works their debt off is between the guilty party and the person they are ´sentenced´ to serve. The Council of Elders does make certain to check in with the vagrant and their debtor to make certain all is going well, and that the debtor is not taking advantage of the situation by giving harder tasks than called for in the crime.
Short-Term/Long-Term Imprisonment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Short term imprisonment is the detainment of another while pending a trial, or the holding of another for a period of time until they´ve served a sentence deemed by the Council of Elders for a particular crime. This sort of punishment is often served when the Council of Elders is uncertain what to do with the Ogier who has committed a crime. It is also served for those who´ve proven to be a danger to themselves and others for a period of time, and is meant as a time to ´cool´ down and think matters over, and question their mistakes.
Long term imprisonment is the detainment of another for long periods of time. This, like execution, serves as an absolute last resort for cases pending. Rape cases will almost, without a doubt, receive this type of sentence, if not one of banishment and branding along with it, to make certain that offenders do not repeat the crime, and to make certain that the Elders can keep an eye on the person who would do such a thing.
OOC: It is understood that imprisonment keeps characters away from game play. It is also understood that within the Ogier society, that short-term imprisonment might be up to and including 50-100 years of an Ogier´s life, while long-term imprisonment might be up to and including 100-300 years of an Ogier´s life. Because of game play, however, the Ogier Staff is willing to make a compromise for short-term and long-term imprisonment cases, so that players -may- be released, to play the game and continue character development. These punishments are not meant to punish the player OOCly, however we do feel that characters who commit crimes should also commit to whatever consequence that follows a crime.
