Ogier Area Meeting - May 11, 1999

EVENT: The Ogier held their first Area Meeting. Various topics such as
informational pointers on playing Ogier, how to help the area grow and become
more active, and a plot brainstorming session were held.
DATE: May 11, 1999
LOGGER: Ogierbldr and Marith

Marith hmms. I'm sorta disappointed with the turnout. Was hoping more people
would come.

Kus'kinn says "but Boss! the important ones are here:)"

Marith grins.

Shu'Shanna fully agrees

Nita has arrived.

Shu'Shanna waves to Nita

Nita arrives, jingling bells and whistles. :)

Kus'kinn waves at Nita

Kus'kinn says "there is one more of us boss, the treesinger is here!"

Hail, Hail the Gangs all here begins to play in the background

Marith grins.

Nita hihis. :>

Fennel smiles again, "I'm here really, just finishing up some comm
philosophical debate spam." ;)

Marith okies. Well, sadly this looks like everyone we're gonna get out of lots
of connects. So, I'm gonna start rather than wait. I'd like to thank Fennel for
coming, our only non Ogier player :)

Kus'kinn says "thank you Fennel" Kus bows"

cheers can be heard for the visitor

Fennel grins and curtsies, "My pleasure to be here."

Marith says "The first thing up to bat on the agenda are some racial concerns
that people might be having. I've a long list of notes that I've written up
that might prove to be helpful. After I present them, we can discuss the things
surrounding the notes, and any other cocerns that players here might be having
about the area."

Nita nodnods. :)

Shu'Shanna listens attentively, while taking notes

Marith says "The Ogier are not a widely known race in the books. There maybe be
a total of 50 pgs of text concerning these creatures. This seems to be passing
as a problem for many Ogier characters, and people who might like to play Ogier
but do not know how. Were here today to talk about any concerns that players
might have, and to try to answer any questions players might have about the
Ogier race or area."

Marith says "Id like everyone to know that even I am uncertain of some, if not
many, of the customs, actions and associations that the Ogier might have.
Because of the little bit of information that we have, I have created several
references that might be helpful role-playing an Ogier character, or with an
Ogier character. Many of these references have been created from scratch, to
give a better idea of what the Ogier might be like. Most of the information
provided is guesswork, because Jordan did not include as much detailed
information about the Ogier as he did some of his other areas. This means that
things may vary from the books slightly to help accommodate for the Ogier as a
PC area, and to help accommodate players with different needs."

Marith says "The list of references created can be found by typing +lhelp in
any of the IC Ogier rooms, or within the Ogier Travel Agency located in the OOC
zone. There, you may find various cultural references that might be useful for
RP. The ones that Id like to point out tonight, especially are: appearance,
areas, clothing, crime, customs, jobs, justice system, laws, npcs, sayings and
the pact."

Marith says "The appearance file gives players an idea of what Ogier look like,
as well as interesting tidbits about Ogier anatomy. Ogier range anywhere from
8-10 ft tall, have normal hair that can be grown long or short, and are
generally larger in size to humans. Also, they never wear earrings because ears
are one of their erogenous zones something which they tend to keep covered when
they are not expressing emotion."

Marith says "The 'areas' file gives information on various ways if interacting
with other nations and organizations. This file is not yet complete, but Im
working on it. The area leaders have worked together to organize these files,
so you may find similar articles within the other areas. This proves to be
useful information when you run into groups like the Children of the Light and
one wants to declare you a Trolloc or a Darkfriend."

Marith hopes she's not boring anyone! I had hoped to make this an informational
session, then hold questions and things. Just checking :)

Kus'kinn eyes are locked on Marith, listening intently

snoring can be heard throughout the field

Fennel smiles, her eyebrows raised with curiosity and interest.

Nita chuckles.

Marith says "The crime, laws, punishments and justice system files outline the
Ogier criminal justice system, and how they deal with various crimes committed
within the Stedding. TheStedding is felt to be under its own law, however the
Ogier tend to work with the justice system that their Stedding is located
within. In these files you will see information regarding how consent is viewed
when one has created a criminal act, the various Ogier laws and their
surrounding punishments, and how the Ogier legal system works, which is
something close to modern day trials. Ogier use Speakers to represent the
plaintiff, who stands on trial before the Council of Elders. The meetings may
either be closed or open, depending on the particular crime."

Marith continues :)

a paper airplane flies across the classroom hitting Nita in the back of the
head

Nita ahms..?

Marith says "The customs and sayings files delve a bit more into Ogier every
day life. The customs file revolves around information such as respecting ones
elders, general views on strangers, naming days and how to name ones child
should we have any Ogier who decide to become pregnant J The sayings file
revolves around various addages that the Ogier use in common day speech. The
most common addages used are:The blessing of the Light and stillness upon you."
which is a general blessing, "By the Tree and Stillness" which is an Ogier way
of swearing and saying "Blood and Bloody Ashes", and "Your name sings in my
ears." which weve had a few humans end up changing to "Your name rings in my
ears" instead."

The snoring suddenly stops

Marith says "The file on the Pact is perhaps the most important file out of the
bunch, for IC reasons. The Pact is the peaceful code that the Ogier live by.
Within the Stedding /everyone/ is expected to live by the code of peace, to
harm none. I believe this to be, because the Stedding are the last remnants of
the peace that was before the Breaking of the World however there may be other
views on this. The Ogier do not take kindly to any who attempt to break the
Pact, however Ive found the trickiest thing was deciding just how far it
extended. In the books, Ogier have been known to eat animals so Ive assumed
that maybe it did not extend to hunting. This is reflected in the various jobs
that Ive created for the Ogier area."

Marith says "Which brings me to the final reference that Id like to make to our
informational resources: +jobs. If you shift through it, you may see various
jobs that seem out of place, or are not like the Ogier in the books. It is my
belief that even though the Ogier preach about peace and harmony, that they all
may have some sort of dark element held within them. Not exactly Dark enough
for them to turn to the Dark One,but enough to consider them more hasty than
most Ogier, and maybe more suited toward a warriors needs. Because of this, Ive
added the categories of Ogier Watchman the equivalent of a Town or City
guardsman, and the Ogier Scouth, to accommodate those who wish to be more than
the average book bearing Ogier. And, also because we all see Loial running
around the books getting into trouble all the time :) And hes a scholar!"

Marith acks as she notices Word and Mush clash adn some of her punctuation goes
away!

Marith finishes with that. Anyone still awake?

Fennel giggles and nods.

Kus'Kinn waves his hand

Marith chuckles. OKie... anyone have any questions about the Ogier that they'd
like answered. I can try - but I'm no expert by any means. If only Jordan would
get more involved about the culture!

Marith waits? Comments then? Either are fine. We are here to share our thoughts
:)

Fennel raises an eyebrow and probably has several questions, but can't think of
any at the moment, "I have started reading through the +lhelp files and am
finding them very helpful."

Erilan has arrived.

Shu'Shanna waves to Erilan

Marith cools. We were just discussing the Ogier as a race, and some of the
concerns surrounding them. If you've anything to share, or have any worries
Erilan, please feel free to speak up.

Erilan waves.

Fennel raises a hand, "I thought of one. The areas file doesn't list this
Steddings relationship with the WT. Any general comments about that. I'm
curious because I'd like to see more TP/RP between the WT and SS."

Marith has it... :) Just not up yet.

Marith says "Give me a sec to poof it up here."

Fennel smiles and thanks you. ;)

Marith says "The Ogier view the Tower as a necessary element in the world. Men
were the ones who broke the world with the tainted Saidin. There is no better
choice to deal with those that hold the power than the Aes Sedai. Because of
the respect they have for the Tower, the Ogier keep in contact whenever they
discover news that might be of interest to the Aes Sedai."

Marith says "Consequently, Deia has a counterpart for the Tower that involves
the Ogier. I've spoken to her about the possiblity of teaching AS the Old
Tongue as well, though only OOCly."

Marith means Ogier Tongue, not old tongue.

Fennel smiles and nods, "Thanks! And are AS guests welcome in SS? Especially
one who has befriended Ogier in the past and learned some of the language. (I
have to have somewhere to use it."

Fennel giggles.

Marith nods. "AS are most welcome in the Stedding. About the only char types
not welcome are DF's ;)

Marith says "Well, they are OOCly, just not ICly ;)"

Kus'kinn says "Dosent being in the stedding cut channelers off from the Source
Marith?"

Marith nods. It definitely does, nor can any effects channeled at the stedding
go into the stedding. That's why the Waygates aren't in the Stedding, because
they were created with Saidin.

Marith says "They are located just outside the stedding proper."

Fennel wonders, "I'm the new Gray Ajah head (mediators, lawyers, negotiatiors)
and I'm wondering if it would be appropriate to recruit An ogier or two to be
Eyes-and_ears in SS. I'm also interested in eventually sending some Gray
Sisters if not myself here to study the Ogier system of laws. Give them a
slightly new slant on judicial systems in the world." ;)

Marith hmms, "I definitely don't see anything wrong with it."

Fennel smiles and nods, adding it to her list of things to work on. :)

Marith chuckles.

Nita smiles. Ask Nita ICly, you might find something there. I'd be happy to
catch some more RP. :)

Marith says "Any other comments, questions concerns before we move on?"

Kus'kinn stands and bows to Marith "I am sorry Eldest, I have to leave but Shu
has told me that she will continue to log, May I be excused?" he looks sad at
having to depart.......

Erilan would like to have the Tower involved, as long as I'm not subject to
experiments :).

Marith noddles. No problem Kus.

Shu'Shanna waves bye bye to Kus

Marith ohs. I'm turning that ter'angreal tidbit to the Tower. :)

Marith says "We might get more involvement, when I can catch Deia :)"

Kus'kinn walks to the east, finding the faint trail.

Fennel smiles, "I can relay a message to Deia if you like. I usually catch her
when she's on." ;)

Fennel giggles, "And if someone wants to send an IC message to the WT for the
Gray Ajah Head, I'll make sure someone gets sent here pronto." ;)

Marith says "She already knows IC and OOC, it's just catching one another
online to RP it out. Marith won't tell any but her."

Fennel smiles and nods, "Of course."

Marith okies. If nothing else, I'm continuing to the next section. Inactivity
and how to go about changing it.

Marith says "Lately, and in the past, the Ogier Area has not been a very active
element in the game. This is something that I have been desperately trying to
change. My intention was to always have the Ogier doing something even if it
was getting together once a night each week, but even that little task seems to
be proving to be difficult. Id like to have a general chat session on how you,
as players, think we can tackle this problem, and come up with ideas that we
could try implementing. As a side note, this is my first attempt at an area
meeting, in hopes that maybe this might help in getting us more organized as an
area on Tales."

Marith wonders if anyone here has ideas that we could try to use to help? Yes, this is a plead :)

Marith says "Specially since I was hoping that an informational meeting would
help do the trick, but we don't have anyone to speak about supporting us, as
you can see."

Fennel suggests, "If at all possible, get your best RPers out into the world to
RP with other people. Once people start coming into contact with Ogiers and
seeing how cool it is, they'll want to have Ogier characters and as the number
of Ogier characters grows you'll be able to do more with the area. If possible,
I'd also have a big SS party. Some kind of Centennial celebration. Turn it into
a big party and send out delegates to invite people from the various areas over
for some festive RP." :)

Shu'Shanna shakes her head, no one is ever here when she is around

Nita says "Active promotion! As fennel says. Play with them. :)"

Shu'Shanna wonders if she can take one home for a pet

Erilan just thinks its a matter of getting people on at the same time...
usually don't see people on. And since this is my only Tales alt, I don't
roleplay with others or idle much :).

Marith says "Shu'shanna, you don't just have to RP with other Ogier. We're in
cities and going to open areas so you can RP with humans and other things. You
aren't restricted to just logging in when other Ogier are :)"

Marith says "So really, saying that no one logs in ever, is kinda... well...
not an excuse :)"

Shu'Shanna nods, "ok wasn't sure about that

Zedrum has arrived.

Fennel points out, "It is hard for everyone in an area to meet at the same
time. People live in different time zones. If you can increase the number of
Ogier PC's there will be people in each of the timezones and people will
overlap more giving more TP opportunities."

Fennel icks, "/More/ people in each of the timezones."

Marith didnt bring us to TV to just sit around and do building. I had really
hoped that others would get actively involved in the area while we werehere,
but that looks like a bust. We're gonna try again with another area, but I'll
be covering that plan shortly. I like your idea Fennel, that has merit and
might work into something that Saidar had asked me to consider.

Marith says "Does anyone else have any ideas or comments, suggestiosn?"

Marith waves to Zedrum, "Welcome to the Ogier Area meeting. Right now we're
discussing how inactive the Ogier are as an area, and ways to help improve
that."

Zedrum nods. "Thanks. Sorry if I'm a bit late."

Marith says "Not a problem. I'll be posting a log of it on the web pages later
:)"

Teric has arrived.

Teric goes home.

Teric has left.

Marith hmms. Well, I guess I can explain what plans I have for the Ogier as a
whole, since that might help tie into this discussion.... :)

Marith says "One of the things that I have talked to the wizards about, is the
possibility of not returning to the Stedding for quite some time. The basic
premise behind this is that Marith wishes to break the old molds and have the
Ogier become more worldly in matters. She is revolutionary and sees that things
are growing up around them without most even noticing. To her, this is bad
because change may bring destruction later. Knowledge is the key to the Ogiers
existence, and the way to gain knowledge is to be out and about and getting
involved in things, rather than staying reclusive and hidden away as the Ogier
race has been doing for several centuries."

Marith says "The OOC reason behind this is to get the Ogier more involved in
the various areas. My plan is to visit each of the Areas and interact with them
through TPs and other cultural aspects. The next area that the Ogier are
slotted to go to is the Aiel Waste. For each area that we travel to, I plan to
have a major TP surrounding the move of the Ogier, to make things more
sensible, and to give the Ogier a sense of purpose for being in that particular
area, other than to hang around bars or other oddities that might not befit
them. The plot surrounding the Aiel Waste revolves around a major and exciting
discovery for the Ogier something thats been right under their noses all this
time and theyve never suspected."

Marith says "I'd be willing to listen to any comments or suggestions regarding
this particular plan or any plot ideas that others might have when the Ogier
travel to the various other areas, or get involved with the other
organizations. Also, anyone interested in getting involved in the Ogier plots
is more than welcome to do so, either through a human character, or an Ogier
alt."

Erilan thinks this is a *really* good idea, if we're all involved. "I sort of
felt a little like an extra wheel at the Tar Valon event I attended. It was all
wonderfully done and planned out, like a story for a small number of people. It
was really good roleplay for those that had a role.

Fennel suggests, "What worked well when the TV delegation went to Caemlyn was
to post that they were coming, and at the end add an OOC note that add on TPs
would be welcome. Maggae did that and I was able to successfully integrate 1
small RP event and 1 extensive TP into the framework of her TP. It really
worked well to expand the opportunities inherent in the event."

Marith says "Well, each of the RP situations will have stages where there's
tons of RP. It's not going to be BANG something that happens in one night.
It'll be a plot that leads around various actions and plans, that'll include as
many people as possible."

Erilan nods.

Marith wonders how you set things up. Did you ask Maggae what she had planned
for her TP and get a full outline, or did she surprise you with some of the
things? I'd like to try to surprise the people in the Ogier area wiht some of
the RP, since the discovery in teh Aiel Waste is not something they'll be
expecting.

Marith is attempting to try to give every type a character a different aspect
in the plots. Guardsman, scholars, people knowledgeable and interested in
mystery are needed for this next plot - which I'll announce over the list like
I did the last one.

Fennel nodders, "Basically we surprised eachother. Each of us had very
open-ended TPs and we let people RP however they wanted inside of certain plot
devices that we controlled, like placing a clue for PC to find after a certain
point for example. Nothing was scripted."

Marith will definitely need scouts for the next plot too :)

Marith hmms. Well, I do a basic outline of goals that I'd like to accomplish,
and there are certain elements that need to be scripted, however everything
else is free form. Most, if not all, of the Ogier events had been free form RP
to them. The only thing I think we scripted was the man cutting up a tree so
that Nita could reveal her treesinging ability - and the reasons why we went to
TV.

Nita nodnods. :)

Fennel smiles, "The really hard part was getting characters to feel comfortable
going with the RP. Several kept paging wanting to know what to say and where to
be." She nodders at Marith, "For example in my tp Maggae was poisoned (she of
course had to consent to that) then I had staging areas for the RP. A hidden
tapestry that had to be found, A hidden key that had to be found, A puzzle on
the tapestry that had to be solved. I could control the outline points like
when the tapestry was found for example, but I left everything in between up to
the RP of the characters. It sounds like you are right on track with your TP
design." ;)

Marith always designs TPs so people can do what they will between different
points. :) Mostly, I'd like the Ogier to get together with other humans for the
social exchange. I consider the TP a device to help with that - but at the same
time what them to have fun where they can. THe reason why we are going to the
Aiel area next is because they are starving for RP just about as much as we are
- though it seems to be picking up lately. When the Tinkers visited, other than
a few social exchanges/parties, there really wasn't much to the visit other
than to visit. I feel there should be /some/ reason why someone goes
somewhere... to make things a little interesting.

Marith wonders if anyone has any ideas for TPs that could include other areas?
IE: I need to decide where the Ogier are going after the Aiel. I polled the
Ogier as a group and got only /two/ responses out of them all on where they
wanted to go. Since I was impartial, I went with the majority since one voted
for every area except TV and one voted exclusively for Aiel.

Nita has her ideas, but you have them. :)

Marith does?

Fennel smiles, "I'm partial to Caemlyn myself. Both of my characters started
there. They have a really good group of people and could use some help with
RPing events to help them grow even stronger."

Marith hasnt gotten anything new from you Nita?

Zedrum agrees with Fennel. =)

Nita erfs? Me resend.

Marith chuckles. Well that is an idea. I've avoided Caemlyn, admittedly because
I've got two characters there. One is sort of a major figure in Caemlyn
limelight, and other is just an every day person.

Marith has no aversion to going there. At one time I had 4 characters there :)

Marith okies. "Are there any suggested TP Ideas for Caemlyn? I've pretty much
decided that the Ogier need a reason to go to each area, rather than roaming
aimlessly, and using the Stedding as a stopover to talk to the Elders and what
not before moving on again. Something to give their roaming purpose rather than
look like haphazard nonsense.

Marith really just has this plan to make the Ogier the saviors of everything :)

Fennel giggles, "My alt is an atypical noble there and would love to see an
Ogier, let alone a whole troop of them." ;)

Marith is joking of course, 'But could never hurt to try."

Zedrum applauds Marith's plan. =)

Erilan thinks that the Ways could require some Maintenance or something. We
haven't had anything to do with them so far.

Marith hmms, "There's an IC reason why we haven't done anything with the Ways
yet. The old Eldest closed Maotai's off. She was rather... strict about any
outside contact unless it was with other Ogier. Also, I'm sorta waiting for
Dspace to open so we /actually/ have them. I've plans for a major plot
surrounding our first IC use as a Stedding group :)

Marith could reconsider that - if it seems like a worthy cause, but trying to
work with how I had set up the area to begin with as well.

Marith says "And they have been used. The Caemlyn group came from Caemlyn and
went to the Tower through the Ways - but that got little exposure I think."

Erilan nods.

Marith wonders if Erilan has any ideas specific to the ways, other than just
maitenance?

Zedrum suggests perhaps a scholarly study of the Ways?

Marith hmms. Well there are rumors of that creepy thing in the ways. Machin
Shin is not as developed as in the books. It's just sorta starting, so it's all
mysterious and stuff - since the ways are open and in use :)

Erilan didn't have anything huge... was trying to find a reason why we would
need to go somewhere :).

Marith ohs! Well, maybe we could tie the two things together.... maintenance
and study. Like I said, the Caemlyn party, the prince, nobles and all went
through the Waygates. A guardsman was lost in there - since they are all dark
like in the books and decay has just started. SOme speculated that it was hte
strange thing, while others think he just wandered away stupidly.

Marith hasn't ICly talked to Greydon or Aislynn about any of that, but I could
maybe talk to them and see if they'd want to the Ogier to come out to Caemlyn
and study the waygates around there - but we'd need something to occur there to
make things a little more intereting than just a little study. :)

Erilan nods. "But if you have a good reason to delay using the Ways ICly, that
works, too. We just need other reasons for trips.

Marith ohs. Reasons aren't too hard once I get talking. Only took two hours for
Aiel/Ogier thing, and once I get going I get tons of ideas :)

Zedrum says "Maybe nobles want to start using the Ways?"

Marith says "IE: I think for Shienar, we could probably do something with the
Blight."

Fennel smiles, "I proposed a new holiday idea to Aislynn and she liked it. I'm
not sure when it is going to be, but it is called the Day of Roses and it is a
day when the city gets freed from work to do good will and maintenance things
around the city. Perhaps the Ogier could join the festivities and help repair
the Ogier built buildings..."

Fennel giggles, "Kind of a clean up the city day."

Marith says "That's another thing that they can do, but if so just one night of
RP with that. I think they've had it with repairs :)"

Fennel giggles, "I'm sure that we could let the repairs slide and have some
parties in honor of the visiting Ogier." ;)

Marith considers. Someone could go missing in the Waygate, again - and they can
formulate party to try to find them. Various things can happen: 1) they could
actually end up finding the body of the guardsman who disappeared a few months
ago, 2) they could find the person that disappeared, alive but catatonic or 3)
find the body of the person that disappeared....hmm.....

OGIERBLDR got disconnected. Marith takes up the log after this point.

Fennel smiles, Perhaps a symbol on one of the marker stones inside directs the
Ogier to a hidden cache of Ogier artifacts, of purely historical and
sentimental value."

Marith hmms. I donno that Ogier have too many artifacts other than sung wood :)

You say "Those seem to be the things that the Ogier prize most, particularly
the larger pieces like beds and stuff."

Fennel giggles, "I meant just works of art. Sung wood, beautifully shaped metal
jewelry and the like."

Marith peers at Nita.

Marith cools. Guess we are on the same note then ;)

Erilan grins. "I think maybe some seeds of an extinct plant might work."

Fennel grins, "Ogier do seem to be a sentimental bunch and value their
historical heritage."

Kus'kinn walks from the east, exiting the faint trail.

Kus'kinn sits quickly

Marith ooohs at Erilan. that's an idea. Maybe I can convince them to give us
seeds from a chora.... With Ms Treesinger here, we might be able to get one to
grow. That'd also give us another reason to visit the Aiel - place it in their
care.

Fennel giggles and loves brainstorming in action, "Great Idea!"

You say "Afterall, time's not supposed to pass in the ways at very much :)"

Marith notes she gets dangerous when she brainstorms :)

Erilan likes that. I didn't think of chora. :)

Nita waheys? That is one thing that's possible..:)

Marith okies. Unless there are any other ideas, or suggestions, I think I might
close here. We've been at it for two hours :) I do appreciate all the
suggestions, and will be printing out my log to reread it. I'll also be posting
the portions of the log that do not include the brainstorming, that way only a
few people know about the plot ideas rather than a grand majority - but if you
want full logs, I'll be happy to email them if you want - just +mail your email
addy.

Zedrum nods.

Kus'kinn raises his hand

You say "Yes Kus'kinn?"

Erilan is tired. "thanks for holding this."

Kus'kinn says "could you start from where you were when I left:)" he smiles and
looks shy....."

Shu'Shanna wumps Kus for that comment

Marith actually needs to go Kus'kinn, which is why she was ending mostly. I can
send the log to you.

Fennel waves to everyone, "Thanks all for making me feel welcome. It was nice
to get to spend some time with you all, even if it was only OOC." ;)

Kus'kinn says "I really do understand and will read the logs, I am sorry I had
to go:("

Zedrum dittoes Fennel. =)

Marith waves to Fennel. I think thanks to /you/ and /Zedrum/ are in order for
being the /only/ non Ogier characters to show support.

Kus'kinn reaches out to shake Fennels hand "It was really very nice for you to
come AS"

Marith is still very disappointed at the turn out, but is glad and appreciative
that she got some ideas and things out of the meeting.

Zedrum was glad to be here. =)

Fennel blushes, "It was my pleasure to come. I'll be sure to pop in some time
IC as well for a visit and try to get some kind of Gray Ajah/ SS RPing going."
;)

Erilan waves night.

Marith cools :) We'll be out and about. If you see any Ogier, feel free to RP
with them, and Ogier should feel free to RP with human types too :)

Zedrum waves cyaz. =)

Shu'Shanna waves

Fennel nodders, "If I'm not crazy pulling my hair out with OOC details ;) I
welcome any form from RP, so just page me." :)

Erilan walks to the east, finding the faint trail.

Kus'kinn backs up after thanking Fennel, and looks down at the ground....bummed
out....."Can anyone stay?" he says in a sad, hollow voice.

Fennel waveers.

Zedrum goes home.

Shu'Shanna will consider it

Fennel goes home.

Kus'kinn looks up at Nita, a hopefull looks spreading across his broad
face........
