George and Kathy Hayne Home Page

Here's part of who and what we are. We're both from Michigan originally, and we met at Kalamazoo College from which we both graduated in 1958. We were married in 1959. We lived in New Haven, CT from 1959 to 1965 while George completed his PhD in physic and Kathy taught high school English in Milford, CT. We moved to Durham, NC in 1965, and our two daughters Sarah and Judith were born in Durham in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Our last move was to Salisbury, MD where we have been since 1976. Our daughters entered fifth and third grades when we moved here. Now they're both living and working in much larger cities.

Our older daughter, Sarah Fitzsimmons, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She moved to New York City, started working for the New York Public Library. Sarah obtained a Masters in Library Science degree, and eventually was a Senior Librarian. Then in Fall 1995 she went back to school full-time, working toward another Master's degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology, starting toward becoming a textile conservator but finishing in the general area of museum studies. In November 1998 Sarah worked as a reference librarian at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Sarah moved to Washington, DC in 1999, and is currently the Master of Web Content at the National Association of Broadcasters. She is also a member of the ‘cello section of the Georgetown Symphony, a community orchestra located at Georgetown University.

Our younger daughter, Judith Hayne, graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and now lives and works in Washington, DC, employed by a small lobbying firm, Davidson & Company. As of December 1998, here's Judith's capsule summary of herself. More recent news is that Judith is to be married in Washington on 20 July 2002 to Pawan Bhatia. The engagement photograph is on our page of family pictures, and here's the engagement announcement.

George is employed by NASA , and works at the Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) of Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). WFF is located at Wallops Island, Virginia. George works in the Observational Science Branch of GSFC's Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes , and most of his work in the past decade has been on the NASA radar altimeter for the TOPEX/Poseidon mission. TOPEX was launched in fall 1992 and has already acquired more than nine years of data; further information is available from the WFF TOPEX group 's web page.

After we came to Salisbury, Kathy taught English for about 20 years at the James M. Bennett High School , but she retired in July 1998 and is now thoroughly enjoying her life at home.

Our hobbies include choral singing, reading, and riding our tandem bicycle. We both sing in the St. Alban's Episcopal Church choir. George plays viola in the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University , and plays bassoon in the Salisbury University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and in the Salisbury City Park Summer Band.

We don't like to put photographs on our home page, because digitized images take a long time to download for those who, like us, have only a phone modem. But if you have the time, patience or interest, there are several photographs available by following this link to family pictures . There is also another page of miscellaneous photographs . This is probably a dynamic process, and the photographs may change from time to time.

You can reach either George or Kathy at home by e-mail to hayne@intercom.net , and you can also reach George at work by e-mail to hayne@osb.wff.nasa.gov . You could even mail messages to us at 1514 Woodland Road, Salisbury, MD 21801.
