Wing Commander is space-flight sim series made by Origin. In WC1-3 you are a pilot for The Terran Confederation (Confed as most call it) who fights campaigns against the Kilrathi Empire, a ruthless race of intelligent creatures who evolved from the equivilants of earth's large, wild cats like Tigers and Lions. They want to obtain all of the human race's planets and resources, and use humans themselves as hunted prey or slaves. The part of the war you are in takes place during the later half of the 27th century (around 2654). After their defeat, (I won't give spoilers, but it won't be how you would expect) the Kilrathi gave up their warlike ways, and there was a tention with the Border Worlds. They almost went to war with Confed, but you proved that the acts they were being framed for was done by a part inside of Confed, the Black Lance. They wanted to "Purify" the human race, much the way Hitler did, but not just one group. They wanted a world where the human race was genetically enhanced beings with engineered strength and intellegence. After WC3 and WC4 is where the Aces timeline slightly branches off of the the series'. It may seem simple, but thats only because I haven't given any real spoilers. It has a very complex, interwoven plot, and memorable characters who come and go/die, both as friends and enemies. There are also branches off from the series, such as Wing Commander: Academy, a "make your own mission" game, and Wing Commander: Privateer, a game in the WC universe where you go on infinite computer generated missions as a Merchant, Mercenary, Pirate, Smuggler, or anything you want. It is set in a large, complex universe of planets and bases, with secrets and a plot you can take for a good storyline. Another game for you with modem game friends, or Kali and such, is Wing Commander: Armada. You can be either Human or Kilrathi, and fight/help your parter in the conquest of a sector. It also has a stand-alone mode, where you can go against the computer or try the Gauntlet(you fly missions against ships which gain in number and skill, and your ship changes to better ones between levels)

Another good place to visit is the Wing-Commander channel on DALnet (#wing-commander). The hosts, Eagle-1 and Bearcat, have a daily chat every day starting at 7 pm EST, and an official chat on one subject every Saturday starting at 7 also. To find the weeks current topics, go to the #wing-commander home page To get on IRC, you need software (I suggest mIRC, which can be found through a net search on my main page's search page), and some server names, like:
Just use the server menu(folder with nothing on it), select one of these servers, and use the chan menu (the folder with a #) and type in: #wing-commander

from a disease for which (10 years ago) there was no cure. His pod
has been pulled from the wreckage of a star-freighter called Canera,
which was mysteriously attacked by ships of an unknown
origin. He has lost his memory and is now faced with rediscovering his
identity by interacting with dangerously devious and
sinister characters, some of whom are out to kill him. Arris must endure
a roller-coaster journey of bribery, corruption,
deception and violence. However, the decisions you make will decide his
plight.
