Learning Disabilities
The Facts:
- 10-20% of the general population has LD.
- 1 in 10 school age children has LD.
- LD children represent over half the special education children
in school today.
- 20% of children with LD also have attention deficit or hyperactivity.
- The learning disabled think and learn differently. They are not
retarded. In fact, usually they have above average intelligence.
- Learning disabilities are LIFE disabilities affecting everything
a person does.
- Some famous LD people: Thomas Edison, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert
Einstein, and Walt Disney.
What are learning disabilities?
- Permanent disorders affecting the way intelligent people receive, store,
process and produce information.
- Conditions unrelated to mental or physical handicaps.
- "Hidden disabilities" -- people with LD look like everyone
else.
How do you recognize LD?
- Deficits in one or more of the following:
- Reading Comprehension, spelling, written expression, problem solving
or math computation.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Attention span and controlling impulsivity.
- Following written or spoken instructions.
- Interpreting visual information.
- Expressing thoughts with proper words.

- Sponsors educational programs for members and the public at large.
- Provides newsletters from national, state and local organizations.
- Compiles book, tape and VCR referral information.
- Makes available professional referral information.
- Provides school advocacy assistance.
- Provides legal information about the rights of the leaning disabled.
- Offers school and college referral information.
- Provides assistive technology information lists, including computer
programs.
- Offers a support network to aid in understanding and coping with the
challenges of LD.
