Radio From Downtown - UPDATE

Van Williamson / RFD Productions

"Radio From Downtown," the Delmarva Peninsula's only live-to-tape radio variety show, returns to the Avalon Theater, Saturday, November 18th, for another fun-filled evening of music, comedy, and radio theater. The bi-monthly program will be broadcast the following day, November 19th, on WESM (91.3 FM) from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and WECI (1460 AM) from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

"In the true spirit of American entrepreneurship at its craftiest, we will be giving away RFD t-shirts for free in exchange for a sizable donation to the charity of our choice, the RFD Foundation," commented producer Van Williamson in a statement from his office. "Unfortunately, the shipment of RFD holiday products we had on order from a sweatshop in singapore has been delayed because of revolution or something, and probably won't arrive until sometime next summer. So I'm afraid it's t-shirts or nothing," the gaily-attired Williamson said.

The November program will feature pianist/singer Anne Watts, poet Nancy Mitchell, and the return of guerrilla accordianists the Bellows Babes. The Zingers, an eight-voice chorus, will present a medley of songs from the 1940's, and biologist Paul Spitzer will talk about his research into the loon family, and play some recorded examples of this mellifluous waterfowl. The Downtown Players, featuring special guest Susan Stamberg (from National Public Radio), will debut a new radio play about the near-loss of Thanksgiving dinner at the local prision and orphanage, and jazz sextet Swing Shift will provide music before and during the radio taping. The show will also feature the Flamingo Brothers, Phil and Ramone.

The November 18th performance begins with Swing Shift set at 7:30, and the taping starts at 8:00. Tickets are $10 for adults, and children under 12 will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available at the door, or can be reserved by calling the Avalone Theater at 410-822-0345. The theater is located in downtown Easton at 40 East Dover Street, across from the Tidewater Inn.
