Now is the time for all good readers
to come to the aid of their curmudgeon.

Apologies to Winston Churchill

Most of our readership is local, and we like that. It's a big world, and while we hope it keeps spinning around the sun, we care more about our part of it than we do about the rest of it.
So, we don't care if we are ever the "Top 5% of the Web", or not. But we do care what the local press thinks about things, especially when it comes to the web.
The Daily Times, the gentle giant that has been so important to ICNet and to The Shore Journal, has recently been asking its readers this question:

"What is your favorite website ?
Call (410)-749-7171 ext 234"

In the fine tradition established by Kathie Lee Gifford, who was voted the most beautiful woman on television by TV Guide readers after she unabashedly solicited for votes on the air, we are asking for your help. Look at Meshach. Can you honestly refuse him this one, tiny honor ?
We hope not. And we hope you will call, and cast your vote, if you do read the Journal, even if it's only once in a while.
Our writers and editors put a lot of time in this, and they do it because they believe in it. They believe in you, and so does Meshach, poor little raggedy guy.
So, make his day. Make his month, make his year. Call and vote, if you will. He'll be grateful, and so will we.
Is Kathy Lee the most beautiful woman on television ? According to TV Guide... yes, she is. Maybe Meshach will get to meet her, maybe there will be a convention of unabashed vote-swayers. If there is, we'll let you know about it in... (you guessed it) Delmarva's Favorite electronic publication.
Other websites that get our vote, (we cannot bring ourselves to call on our own behalf, although we think nothing of asking you. Honor among thieves and all that, we suppose...), would clearly be:
  • The Global Classroom (http://www.intercom.net/local/weeg)
  • My Virtual Reference Desk (http://www.refdesk.com/)
  • The Land of Glenn (http://www.intercom.net/user/gdj)
  • Shore Links (Eastern Shore Regional Library) (http://198.76.240.27/)
  • Wicomico County Library (http://www.intercom.net/wicomico/)

There are others, of course, but we hope you will see that the local content on www.intercom.net, whatever it is you enjoy, gets your vote. It's a numbers game, friends, and without the numbers... it's not much of a game.

Shamelessly yours,
March 16, 1996 Charles Paparella The Shore Journal

You scoundrel, you !
