Radio From Downtown Returns To Salisbury
by Van Williamson

"Radio From Downtown," the Delmarva Peninsula's only live-to-tape radio variety show, will return to Salisbury State University's Caruthers Auditorium June 8th for the first time in over three years to stage a benefit
for Bob's Bait City, a long-time sponsor threatened by pressure from a proposed outlet mall planned for the north Salisbury area in 1997.

The bimonthly performance by local writers, musicians, actors, and artists will be broadcast the following day, June 9th, on WESM (91.3 FM) from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and WCEI (1460 AM) from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

"Due to a bizarre and twisted series of circumstances we were forced to shut down operations in Salisbury a few years ago after three years' worth of programs," said producer Van Williamson, a Salisbury radio producer and musician. The program ran from October 1989 to January 1993 as "RFD-Radio Free Delmarva," and received an Honorable Mention in the 1992 awards competition sponsored by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.

The show was reborn at the Avalon Theatre in Easton in April of 1995. "We're returning to Salisbury at the behest of businessman Bob Baitman, and to answer an increasing number or requests from our many fans in the local area," Williamson said. "I am not at liberty to say more."

The June program will feature Pamela Taylor Miller, folk/bluegrass group Gravelly Run, barbershop quartet 4 In A Row, film critic Jack Purdy with a review of some summer movies, and the winner of the prestigious Sophie Kerr Prize, awarded each year to a promising writer or poet who is a student at Washington College in Chestertown. Jazz sextet Swing Shift will perform as the house band, and The Downtown Players will present an original radio play by Van Williamson and Jack Purdy. Completing the lineup are guerrilla accordionist the Bellows Babe and the Flamingo Brothers, Phil and Ramone.

The June 8th show begins at 7:30 with a Swing Shift set, and the taping starts at 8:00. Tickets are $10 for adults, and children under 12 will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Caruthers Auditorium is in Caruthers Hall on the campus of Salisbury State University.
