The Best Gift

Rev. Van C. Heslop

A few weeks ago I was called to go to the Kennedy Institute to visit a young boy. When we arrived , my associate and I were quickly escorted to the security office to check ID's, and, after approval, we then went to the third floor to see our little friend.

He has cancer, and has not been given too much hope.

This young boy had been very active in our Royal Ranger boys club. You just donıt know what to say at times like these.

We entered the room, said hello and then sat down. His mom-mom was right by his side.

"Tristan, how are you doing ?", we asked.

"Who is that ? ", He said. He had lost sight in one eye and losing the other now too.

"Pastor Van."

"Oh, yeh, hi bub, how you doing bub ?", he asked.

Then it hit me . We may never see this fine little boy again.

Then he said something that rang loud and clear.

"Pastor Van, I still love Jesus and he lives in my heart. Iım gonna get better, ya know."

Wow, my heart just exploded with joy to feel the faith of a seven year old. That day we left the hospital with a clear picture of what we are all called to do.

If someone needs a smile, then give it. If time, or money, or food or anything is needed to help someone make it through one more day, it is worth it.

The simple fact is, we donıt know just who is out there, or when trials will strike at our door. We, too, may need a touch of something to make it through the day. God Bless !

(Note: As of Oct.12, many organizations are helping to raise money for Tristan and his family. Story in the Oct.12th, Daily Times)
