Coming Up In The Next Shore Journal

Who Pays What, To Whom, and What For ?

"Everybody's gotta be someplace." Myron Cohen once observed, and many people have to pay monthly for a place to lay their heads. We call this "renting".

For a number of years, efforts have been mounted to regulate and license the business of renting property in our city, and to require regular inspections of these properties.

These efforts have always failed here, some say because they are not needed, others say it's because those who own buildings have more political infulence than those who rent them.

We call this "discord".

This argument has cost our city money, but more importantly, it has cost time which might have been more productive. We hold no opinion on the issue, we simply wish it could be resolved, and that our government could move on to new business.

We find ourselves in a unique position to help.

This week, we are going to do something we believe only a web publication can do effectively: we are going to give everyone equal time.

We will hear from those who say rentals must be regulated, and from those who say it is not necessary. Each party will make its case, and will be limited only by their ability to keep their readers reading.

We will also look at the issue ourselves, and share our thoughts of conversations we have had with those on both sides, along with several thousand words-worth of pictures.

We call this "fairness", and while it will not settle an issue which has so long pre-occupied our city, we hope it will promote the understanding needed to find a resolution, and to allow us to move on.

These stories, along with more than our usual collection of humor, art, computing and whatever else drops down the chimney between now and then, await your perusal and enjoyment.

Sunday morning, eleven A.M. sharp. See you then.
