EASTAUGH BLASTS GILCHREST VOTE TO SLASH EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT
by Steven R. Eastaugh
Candidate for Congress

Ocean City, MD--Steven R. Eastaugh, Democratic nominee for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat, today blasted his incumbent Republican rival for voting to cut the earned income tax credit.

Eastaugh hit out saying, "What my Republican opponent has done has the effect of increasing the taxes on people who earn under $27,000 a year. The average increase on those working people is $580 per family. And for what? Newt Gingrich gets his taxes reduced by $79,000 and Steve Forbes enjoys a $360,000 cut.'

The earned income tax credit program was enacted to give tax breaks to low income Americans. It is applied on a sliding scale based on the number of children a family has and the amount of income.

"Wayne Gilchrest is working for Newt and for Forbes," noted Eastaugh. "I am working for the average family who is struggling to get ahead. I support the Families First agenda which includes prevention of teen pregnancy and which would require insurers to provide health insurance for children. I will support tax cuts only for people earning under $70,000.

Eastaugh, a Berlin, Maryland resident, has a doctorate in public health and economic policy.
