Being a Teacher Is Fun!

(Especially if you're a student.)

by Ashley Rowbottom

Hi, I am a 6th grade student at Delmar Elementary School. My full name is Ashley Nicole Rowbottom. At my school I do many things for the teachers. In the morning I boot up Mrs. Shaner's computer, which is in the 5th grade, and Mrs. Phillips' computer, which is in the 2nd grade. I also taught Mrs. Hastings, a 3rd grade teacher, how to send mail online through ICNet because we don't have Windows. We use PINE to get and send mail. I also can do all kinds of things on the computer. I can save and print data. I can also bring up a file. Online I can compose mail, and I can receive mail. There are so many different things I can do on the computer I couldn't name them all.

One day Miss Campbell, a 4th grade teacher, was having trouble booting up her disk. So, I went up to her classroom and I tried to boot up her computer and the stubborn thing just wouldn't boot up. I went down to Mrs. Weeg with the boot disk in my hand. I told her what happened and she said that she would have to look at it. Then the next day she said that it probably was a bad disk. After that she gave me a new boot disk and I went to Mrs. Campbell's classroom and tried the new disk. IT WORKED!! I was so happy.

We have old computers that have boot disks. You know how that is. We really need new computers because we have so many people going to KIDLINK that we run out of computers. We also need Netscape to see all of our pictures online in the World Wide Web.

Have you seen our Delmar homepages? You can find me and Amanda Tillman in the KIDLINK Writers' Corner. We both like to write stories. Our stories are on the World Wide Web.

Hannah, who is in the 5th grade, has learned how to turn on and turn off the computers. I taught her how to do that and how to save files. Her class has written a lot more than they did in the beginning of the year. I think that they are writing more now because I made the computer available for them in their homeroom.

This is what Hannah wrote today. I think she is happy that I taught her.

Ashley taught me how to turn on the computer. It wasn't
easy to learn but now I know. I like to turn on the computer
in my classroom because it is fun . Now my class wants me to
show them how to do it. I think that my class will learn how
to do it easily just like I did. Ashley was a good teacher.

        Hannah Dewey

I love teaching teachers or students because it is fun letting everyone know how to work on the computer. Computers have brought teachers and students together as partners to teach each other new and wonderful things.
