"Please, Mr. Cropper..."
A plea for reason by Kelley Rouse

 Note: This is a response to an opinion expressed by George Cropper in the editorial section of The Daily Times, Monday, July 8th, 1996, which suggests that the Town of Ocean City annex and develop four miles of the northern end of Assateague Island, which is currently protected from development as a national wildlife preserve. Of particular disappointment, is Mr. Cropper's final sentence:

"The land south of the present inlet would be a valuable asset to all of us, as at present it is of little value either to the nature kingdom or mankind."

Please, Mr. Cropper,
watch your words.
Check your values.
It is wrong to be so rough,
on that which is
so fragile.
She is easily broken.
Consider the loss,
to trade
a treasure,
for fool's gold;
and at such a cost.

Please, Mr. Cropper,
look twice.
Feel her pain.
She's going to be robbed; again.
No matter
how cleverly cloaked
in technical skill,
a mask won't hide
the noses that twitch
at the smell of temporal profit;
or the mouths that drool for the kill.

Please, Mr. Cropper.
Think again.
Choose her, this time.
Nothing man-made
no matter how brilliant,
can replace her innate
intelligence.
Concrete and steel
can't fill the needs
of the soul.
The nature kingdom and humankind
truly seek what is real.
