Our Fragile Human Shield

Jo Campbell

What have we lost? With the deaths of two officers just gunned away, The world -- our world -- lost not only two persons, unique and special. Our world lost some of its safety, some of its security, its shield. Every other officer lost a part of the shield of which each forms a part; The shield that shelters all. Every one of us within that shield learned, perhaps for the first time, that this barrier is not impervious. It is made up of human beings like ourselves; Persons, unique and special now lost to our world and theirs. jo 1978
For Albert M. "Rusty" Claggett and Brian Swart, Prince George's County Police officers killed in the line of duty June 26, 1978. The danger and the losses are the same whenever a peace officer dies for us.
