The Year Of The Protest Vote
08/11/96
Common sense tells us
that a "throwaway vote" is just that,
a vote that has no impact on the election.
According to Lee Geraitis, there's a
way to make that non-vote count.

More on the notion of moving
the Ocean City Inlet a few miles
to the south, this time from Steve Eastaugh,
candidate for congress. Rest easy, plovers.
Jo Campbell spent some time with three women likely
to be running the show in Ocean City in the near future.
An interview with Pillas, Sadowski and Howard, and
a look at what's down the road for the Maryland's only
oceanfront property.
Storm season came early this year, and with it renewed
concerns for life, and limb and property.
A recent suggestion to open a bit more of the barrier
islands to development raises the question of just what
"value" really is. Kelley Rouse says these
strips of sand are plenty valuable, just as they are.
The propensity our elected officials have for making much
ado about nothing was evident this week on Capitol Hill.
"To love, honor and cherish, in keeping with federal
statutes."
Author Karol Ann Barnett looks at the Social
Security debate and offers a short and practical
solution.
Once again, P The Elder paints an revealing
picture with his choice of words. This week, an extra
bonus!
Governor Parris Glendening issues a call for volunteers
to wire the rest of Maryland's public schools to
the internet, and we wonder about the schools already there...
When you pass by a house on the side of the road, do you
wonder what's going on inside ? The truth may shock you.
Not all of God's creatures bring out the "mollifying spark
of humanity"... and certainly not when they crawl into your
drink. Kelley Rouse reports.
The world is a confusing place, partly because it is so BIG.
But, if you shrink it down, and take a look, it's pretty easy
to see the whole thing.
You gotta pay attention, if you wanna get along.
It's called Radiovision, friends, and if you're
really hip, you saw a baby born tonight. If you didn't,
well, we have a birth announcement...
Up in Vermont, where all the men are strong, and all the
women are beautiful (tho' some are blue), John Mahoney
publishes The Log Cabin Chronicles. The celebration of
Independence day from the cabin is truly excellent. Take a
look.
While you and I were sleeping off some beers, the folks
at the Center for Democracy and Technology were
out there, protecting our rights. Kinda embarassing,
but here's their report.
A few weeks ago, Jo Campbell was really FURIOUS
at the insurance industry, and since then she's prodded more than
a few legislators into action. Go get 'em, Jo !
On Earned Income Tax Credit
Steve Eastaugh, candidate for congress, takes issue with
Rep. Wayne Gilchrest's recent vote on earned income tax
credit. We're hoping for a response... anyone ?
When Dr. H. DeWayne Whittington took the Somerset County
Board of Education to court over discrimination, he was after
more than money. And more than the Board of Ed was on trial, too.
A recent series in The Baltimore Sun revealed
that the slave trade is still good business in some
parts of the world. While that may have shocked many
of us, it was old news to Jo Campbell, who
wonders... what will come of it now ?
About Medicare ?
Democratic Congressional candidate Steven R. Eastaugh gives
us his take on the Medicare debate.
P The Elder has been poring over those ancient tomes
again, and shares a few more words with us.
For some of us, investment decisions involve choosing between
coffee and tobacco products, but for others, it's more involved.
Chris Peek gives us an inside view of what's what when
you're leasing floorspace.
Witch burnings, GOP files return,
(some of them), and a local hero goes to court.
Another edition of The Warp.
Jo Campbell is mad as hell, and she's not going to
take it anymore. Insurance companies will keep you on as
long as you don't file a claim. Why don't you just GIVE
your money away?
Longtime readers of The Journal know P The Elder as a
raconteur, connoisseur, and scholar. But Pop
was a war-hero, too, and on Hallmark Day we take the
liberty of making note of it.
To love someone is to enable them to grow. Kelley Rouse tells
us how her father gave her more than love... he gave her courage,
and self-assurance. (She also shares a childhood anecdote that
reveals her early signs of radical feminism. "Ouch !!")
The "shocking" Whitewater findings would be hard-pressed
to light the tiniest of lamps, yet Republicans senators
want to light the world with them. When it comes down
to dealing, the Arkansas Travelers are pretty churchy.
When the Freemen rode the motorcoach of surrender to
thier moment of national notoriety, was it restraint
that the government displayed, or something else ? Hmmm.
Boz tells us how timely and current we are, and
we put him up a day late. How perfectly appropriate.
Chris Peek is involved in buying and selling all kinds
of property. He gives us an inside view of what to
look for when making speculative investments.
Red Drum near Tangier Island, and Mako Shark off Chincoteague.
Jeff Lee updates the fishing scene. Thanks, bud.
Somerset County mourns the passing of one of its best,
Thomas E. "Ted" Ward. We tip our hat to a great man.
Is the Wicomico County Council trying to make it harder
for citizens to learn what's going on ? Boz seems to
think so. Check it out...
No wonder the networks are dying. A group of independent
journalists are reporting directly from Bosnia to the
Web. Pretty heavy stuff there.
Sometimes life is funny, sometimes it's not. When it's not,
we like to have something to laugh about. From Patti Weeg.
Peace will still have a chance after all. The Center For
Conflict Resolution at SSU will continue to operate at its
current location. A Shore Journal exlusive, by Kelley Rouse.
Radio From Downtown returns to the air tonight,
and when it does, our city will welcome the return of
its own. You can't keep a good radio program down.
The Boz is noted for asking difficult questions, and getting
answers for them too. He asks about us, and tips his hat
again to his old boss... Mel Toadvine.
Not content with having taught us everything we know, P The Elder
expands our vocabulary even further. It's illuminating.
When the guy who's "never met a computer he couldn't crash"
meets up with Windows 95, it can get pretty ugly. But Boz
prevails. Details inside.
Bozman becomes master of his machine once again and files
a report which explains, to us anyway, just what it is we
are all about. Thank you, oh sage one.
There are times that you
may not be sure what you are doing, exactly, you know
it's something you have to do. Live on location
with Kelley Rouse.
Timothy Leary is dead, and this time it's no joke.
A few thoughts on how the Psychedellic Philosopher
influenced mainstream America. From Kelley Rouse
West-coast correspondent Randy South shed no tears for
Timothy Leary when he finally did die. Seems a lot of those
trips Leary Travel booked were one-way. Can't argue with that.
The story of three wild and crazy guys, an electronic
eyeball, this that and the other thing, and everyone's
favorite new word... "oppornockity". Amazing new developments
make this worth re-loading often. Hmmm...
The live-cam is fun, and the live-cam is business,
but to our new young friend, Geert Merklebach,
it's a way to get back home again.
People who think our young people are not productive
are wrong, we believe. They just don't want to produce
any more french fries and shakes. Enough already !
There are things we see every day that we ignore, like
an old man picking up cans on the side of the road. But
Kelley stops, and talks, and finds a story that hurts to
tell.
Ann Reilly remembers what the world looked like
through the eyes of a little girl.
While many words in the English language come
from ancient roots, some origins are more recent,
and their story just as interesting. A man wearing
nothing but a bowler caused quite a bit of a
donnybrook, and someone called in the bobbies.
