Cosmetology I is the first level of a three-year program beginning in the 10th grade. Customer relations, bacteriology, prevention of disease, and sanitation are stressed. Students examine hair using the microscope and will be able to identify hair disorders and prescribe treatments. Practicing on mannequins, students learn how to cut, set, style, perm and relax hair. Homework, practical assignments and projects are required. Participation in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is encouraged. (This course provides 390 hours of the 1500 hour requirement.)
Cosmetology II is a continuation in depth of areas covered in Cosmetology I. Students study the chemistry of products and their reaction to the hair and skin; sanitation, safe mixing and the application of chemicals are stressed. This course includes a detailed study of the structure and function of the human body including the skin, skeletal muscular, and nervous systems as they relate to massage and facials. Students learn the principles of electricity and its effect on the body as related to cosmetology. Practical work may be performed on customers in the clinic provided students meet state hour requirements and are approved by the instructor. Participation in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is encouraged. (This course provides 590 hours of the 1500 hour requirement.)
Cosmetology III is a continuation and in depth study of the areas previously taught with an emphasis on advanced hair care, cutting, and styling. Students design their own salons. Customer communication is practiced in the clinic. Students will participate in the job orientation program to learn skills necessary for interviewing for jobs, developing resumes, and completing job applications. Students prepare and review to take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology licensing examination. Participation in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is encouraged. (This course provides 590 hours of the 1500 hour requirement.)
Students completing the Cosmetology program with a C or better and accumulating 1500 hours will be eligible to take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology Examination. Students are responsible for the cost of the state examination.
