The Wicomico Applied Technology Center opened it's doors to the students of Wicomico County in September 1966 as the Wicomico Vocational Technical Center. Over the years, our list of courses has changed to meet the demands of the employers in the local area. Some classes have been discontinued, new ones have been added, and others have been modified to reflect current trends in the job market.
Courses that have been discontinued include: Tailoring, Interior Carpentry, Power Sewing, and Service Station Mechanics. Our Medical Services class was revised, improved, and extended and is now known as Health Occupations. As a spin-off of the revisions to the Health Occupations course, a new course, Nursing Assistant has been added. The Service Station Mechanics program was absorbed into the curriculum of the Automechanics course and in the process required the opening of a second class to handle the new material and larger number of students. Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning (HVAC) has been added to train students to meet the needs of this sector of the business community. All courses are constantly updating and revising their curriculum to reflect the ever changing requirements of today's work force.
On September 3rd, 1997 we opened our doors as the Department of Career and Technology Education at our new location, Parkside High School. In addition to the new facilities added to the existing high school, we have added several new courses. These include Criminal Justice, Computer Assisted Drafting & Design (CADD), and High Performance Manufacturing. The Horticulture, Landscaping & Turf Management course has moved to our location from Wicomico Senior High School. Though at this point there is much left to be completed, when finished, we will have one of the most beautiful and modern technology education facilities available.
