HISTORY

WELCOME!

Please let us extend to you a warm southern welcome. We truly enjoy our many visitors. The Ocean City Baptist Church is an exciting blend of Born-again believers who live and work in Ocean City and the surrounding communities. We are very excited about this special ministry. Our visitors add the spice and flavor which make our church so unique and keeps us open to the Lord's leadership in our work.

The church has been here since 1958, when a small group of people began meeting in the fire hall. In 1963, the Baptist Convention of Maryland purchased our present facilities from the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City. In 1965, the Church became a summer coffee house and Hot Line. For 13 years the church was open only during the summer and ministered primarily to young adults and youth.

In 1978, a small congregation wanted to open as a year-round church in Ocean City. Jim White, who was a summer missionary in the coffee house and a seminary student, was asked to stay and be the pastor. Jim resigned in September, 1978, in order that he might continue his seminary work. The chapel, with the help of the Maryland Baptist convention and the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, called Terry Davis to be their full-time pastor. He and his family arrived on January 1st, 1979.

The "Chapel" was constituted in October, 1983. In 1987, the Extension Society of the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware sold to us our buildings for the same price they paid in 1963, and we began some much needed renovations.

Through the years, God has graciously blessed the ministry of our Church. What began with 16 members in January, 1979, has grown into a vital, mission-minded,ministry-oriented Church. We have an extensive vision concerning the future of our church. We firmly believe in missions and one third of our budget is dedicated to missions at home and around the world. We plan to expand our ministry with more adequate facilities, broader discipleship training, starting more churches, and a more extensive crisis outreach program. We now own a Retreat Center which hosts 20 or more mission teams each summer, as well as Christian retreat groups. We started our first mission church in 1985, which has now constituted as the Fenwick Island Baptist Church.

Our Pastor's wife, Lynn Davis has helped to extend our ministries by serving with the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware and the Home Mission Board as Resort and Campus minister on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Having served eight years as a volunteer and part-time minister in these areas she is now commissioned as a full-time Home Missionary. Resort ministry has become a major emphasis in our church. We host mission teams each summer which consist of High School and college age youth from churches across our nation. These young people serve our community through children's programs, puppets, concerts, skits, and receational ministries to spead the message of Jesus Christ.

As the work continues to grow, we consider you, our visitors, a vital part of our ministry. We hope our first priority will always be evangelism and missions. Because of your love and support with prayer, gifts, and involvement our church has been tremendously blessed. We thank you for being a part of this most exciting work. Pray for us that we will be faithful to the leadership of God's Holy Spirit.

While you are in our resort town on vacation or just passing through, please come and visit us, our doors are always open.

We do change our Worship Times in the summer to accomodate all our visitors so please check our Worship Opportunities.
