Vice President Kathy Earehart announced some very exciting news for The Delmarva Morgan Horse Club:
The Delmarva Summer Classic has been voted the People’s Choice Reserve
Winner for Most Improved Show in the country!
The readers of Horse World magazine, a national publication, vote for the People’s Choice winners, so it’s a very prestigious award. Thanks to all of our members who helped us win this award, and especially to Kathy, who works so hard as our show manager to pull it all together!
Kathy also announced that Richard Boule has been confirmed as this year’s judge. Mary Lynn Whitley will be our show steward and her husband, Bill Whitley, will be our ringmaster. These respected show officials will be another big draw for the show.
The most important thing you can do to help our club and the show is to get those sponsorships! If every member of our club sponsored a class, and gathered two more sponsorships from friends or local businesses, we’d be in good shape.
Sponsorships can be for specific classes, or an ad in our show program. Class sponsors’ names will be announced several times when the class is held, and will be printed in the show program.
Ideas for businesses to contact are: tack shops, feed stores, pet shops, sawmills that sell shavings or lumber for stalls, garden centers, hay/straw dealers and truck/trailer dealerships. These businesses are looking for opportunities to advertise directly to their consumers, so what better place to advertise than at a horse show that draws hundreds of people who buy those products and who live in areas within driving distance of those businesses?
Sponsorship forms are available on this Web site. If you don’t have access to a printer, just e-mail or call Kathy (hksheather@aol.com, 302-659-1936), President Jennifer Cording (Saracen@intercom.net, 757-336-3043), or any of the officers listed on the site and we will mail forms to you.
The Comfort Inn on Rt. 301 will again be our official horse show hotel. Rooms go fast, so make your reservations early. For more information, contact Kathy.
We still need volunteers at the show to hand out ribbons, work the gate, and move jumps and carriage obstacles. We also need someone to serve as paddock master at the top of the ingate. This person will direct traffic in and out of the ring, as well as keep exhibitors in the barns informed of progress in the ring. If you can volunteer for any of these positions for any amount of time during the show, please contact Kathy or Jennifer.
Once again, we will hold a silent auction at the show. This event was a lot of fun last year and raised good money for our club. Please consider donating an item, horse-related or not. Jennifer and Mark Cording will coordinate the auction. Please contact them if you are bringing an item to donate, or if you would like to donate something and need to send it by somebody else to the show. You could also ask local businesses to donate an item.
Tom, Liz and Alexis Molin will organize a consignment table at the show. Items can be horse-related or not. If you have outgrown kids’ show clothes, used saddles, or crafts that would appeal to horse people, you can sell them at the consignment table. The charge is just 10% of the item’s selling price, which will benefit the club. If you have items to sell, please contact the Molins at 302-653-4346, tmolin6240@aol.com.
Other news:
Our next Delmarva Morgan Horse Club event will be a free clinic at Heatherstone Morgans in Clayton, Del., on Saturday, March 15. The clinic will be held rain or shine, thanks to Heatherstone’s spacious indoor arena.
From 10 a.m. until noon, Dr. Greg McDermitt, a veterinarian at Brenford Animal Hospital, will address lameness and equine reproduction.
Catherine and Howard Stump will host a lunch at noon. There is no charge for the meal! Thanks to the Stumps for their generosity!
From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Heatherstone’s resident trainers, Jim and Michelle McCleester, will demonstrate how to train a young horse to harness and tips on preparing horse and rider for the show ring, including proper show ring attire. They also will host an open forum for questions on any show-related topic.
This fun and educational day will also feature a silent auction to raise funds for the club. Please consider bringing an item to donate to the silent auction.

A
message from the president:
I'd
like to start off the new year by thanking everyone for their past support of
the Delmarva Morgan Horse Club. Our 2002 Delmarva Summer Classic was a success,
and we expect the 2003 edition to be even better. In addition, we have other
new and exciting activities planned for the year, so please plan to join us.
Welcome
to new members Debra and Kendall Steffen, Sandra and Ellen Shaw, Amy Foster,
and Jim and Michelle McCleester. We are so happy that you have joined the club!
Our
next meeting will be Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Golden Corral in Easton, Md. We
will eat at noon and the meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Please try to join us for
lunch to support the restaurant owner, who is letting us meet there for free.
The Golden Corral is located on Route 50, the main road through Easton. The
phone number is 410-822-8414. We will discuss the upcoming show, the March
clinic, and other club issues, so please try to attend. We need as much support
as possible from all of our members to keep the club going. Please RSVP by Feb.

We
have also planned a clinic for Saturday, March 15 at Heatherstone Morgans in
Clayton, Del. This event will offer something for everyone as Heatherstone's veterinarian
discusses lameness issues and equine reproduction. In addition, Heatherstone's
new resident trainers, Jim and Michelle McCleester, will present tips on
getting ready for the show season. The format will be open discussion with
topics to include attire, harnessing and any other show-related topics in which
attendees are interested. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
lunch will be served. We hope to have a baked goods table to raise funds for

Lastly,
but perhaps most importantly, please renew your membership if you have not
already done so. The cost is minimal and is very important to the future of the
club. We have attached a membership form to this e-mail. If you are unable to

Please mail your form and dues to Treasurer Liz Molin. Her address appears on
the form.
If
you have any ideas for the club, the show or future activities -- especially
ideas for raising funds -- please come to the Feb. 8 meeting. If you can't

from the Nov. 30, 2002 banquet and meeting
The
Delmarva Morgan Horse Club held its annual banquet at the Sail Loft Restaurant
in Milford, Del. on Nov. 30, 2002. As usual, everyone enjoyed the delicious
dinner and great company.
Outgoing
vice president Carol Knight presented outgoing President Kathy Earehart with a gift.
Thanks, Kathy, for your hard work over the years. Kathy will continue as the
show's manager. She does a great job and the show would not go on without her.
The

held a brief discussion about the 2003 show. Contracts were to go out soon.
Members were asked to begin securing sponsorships for the show. Marcia

Brenda
Wallace presented Howard Stump of Heatherstone with the Wilson Memorial Trophy
for his support and dedication to the club.

An
auction followed the meeting with lively bidding and a great auctioneer job by
Mark Cording.
Oct. 26, 2002 meeting
This
year’s show dates will be June 25-28. At the Oct. 26, 2002 meeting in
Salisbury, Tom Molin volunteered to be the show’s announcer at no charge.
Deborah Stephan also has volunteered to be the show secretary. Thanks, Tom and
Deborah, for your generous gestures!
The
club again will hold a silent auction at the show. It was a big success at this
year’s show (we raised $400), and we hope that this year’s auction will be even
better.
We
also will raffle two free stalls, one for the 2003 show and one for the 2004
show. Jennifer and Mark Cording will coordinate the auction and raffles.
A
new feature of the 2003 show will be a consignment table. All exhibitors and
attendees are welcome to bring items to sell at the table with the club
receiving a 10% commission. Liz Molin and Sue will coordinate the consignment
table.
The
club will hold a show meeting in late January or early February. Details will
be announced.
DMHC
clinic
The
club plans to hold a clinic around the end of March at Heatherstone Morgans in
Clayton, Del. A veterinarian will offer a seminar on breeding and lameness, and
we plan to invite a recognized Morgan instructor/trainer to give lessons.
Catherine Stump, Alexis Molin and Jennifer Cording will coordinate the clinic.
More information will be forthcoming.
“Meet
the Morgan” event
The
club hopes to hold a “Meet the Morgan” event in the fall to give the public an
opportunity to learn about the Morgan horse. If you have suggestions or would
like to participate, contact Tom or Alexis Molin at 302-653-4346.
“Dover
Days”
Tom
Molin is investigating how the club can participate in “Dover Days,” which
offers a parade. If you would like more information, call Tom.
SHOW REPORT
Once again, the Delmarva
Summer Classic was a resounding success. Held June 26-29 at Prince George's
Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, Md., the event attracted about 130 horses
from as far as New Hampshire. Comments were uniformly positive, with many
people commenting on the exhibitor-friendly nature of the show.
Wednesday evening's
exhibitors party kicked off the show with an excellent catered dinner in the
air-conditioned conference room situated over the show ring so party-goers
could watch Judge Bernard Parker pin the evening's final classes.
All of the divisions were
well represented, with a wide variety of classes for young horses and riders in
each division. See the show results on this site.
The 6th annual
Morgan Masterworks Youth of the Year Contest, coordinated by Leitha Stone, was
held on June 27-28 at the show. Contestants gave oral presentations on the
topic "Interview a Morgan Horse You Admire," with the horsemanship
division following the next day. The 11 & under winner was Elizabeth
Fawsett, the 13 & under winner was Lauren Marsh, and the 14-17 winner was
Katie Butterworth.

One of the show's new - and highly successful - features was the silent auction. Exhibitors had great
fun bidding on the items and the club raised approximately $400. Thanks to our

shows like the Delmarva Summer Classic left, so please spread the word about
